DVD optical connection to my receiver?

Greetings -

I recently purchased a Sony STR-DE897 receiver which has 4 optical inputs, but curiously one isn't identified for DVD. My temporary solution has been to run the optical from my DVD player to the MD/ Tape input. Works fine, only I have to switch the input on the receiver to Tape, which seems odd.
This is a link to the rear of the receiver:

Am I missing something?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks !

    Welcome to the Polk forum.

There should be something in a setup menu that reassigns the digital inputs. I'm not familiar with that particular receiver, so I can't be of further help.

Have fun with your new receiver.

The digital inputs on your receiver are partially firmly assigned to specific functions. The DVD function is firmly assigned to the coaxial digital input. You can reassign any of the digital inputs to function as Video 1 or Video 2 if you want to.

If your DVD player has a coaxial digital output, I'd suggest using that instead of optical. If your DVD player only has an optical digital ouput, you have the option of hooking up the DVD player to any of the optical inputs on the receiver and reassigning the function to Video 1 or Video 2. The manual covers how to do this.

It seems strange to me that Sony is assigning DVD player functions to coaxial inputs now. I had thought they were mainly pushing the use of optical connectors on their DVD players.

Interesting....I was under the impression that the optical connection is of higher quality then a coaxial connection (my dvd player has both).
Switching the receiver to Tape to play DVD's doesn't really bother me, I just found it odd there wasn't an optical-in provided for DVD.
Hmm, thanks for the tips though
