I just bought my first digicam, a Canon A85. Just wondering, is this a good camera (with regard to picture quality)? I bought it because it allows manual control over everything, which is a very important factor for me.

Anyway, just wondering how the images look on this cam compared to others in the same price range.

from everything I've read online, as far as picture quality Canon is the way to go. Sony's seem to have the best (quickest) autofocus, but for my money, overall Canon is the best because of the quality of the pictures.

I own a Canon G5 and an S500. Couldn't be happier with either of them.

i have an olympus something...4MP, 10x optical, i searched around on the internet for a month before i decided on it. it was the best deal i could get on a camera that i could find. problem is i dont think ill ever be able to go back to something less than 10x zoom...lol

Sony is quicker in autofocus, not sure what model you're refering to but I don't think so. Own a Canon Digital Rebel very fast focus, great pictures.

I had a Canon Powershot G2 that was very nice. I just stepped way up to the Nikon D70 Digital SLR. This is one freakin amazing camera!

Ya really can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon for the most part.

since the original poster mentioned an A85, my comments were directed at the point-and-shoot consumer models, not the $1000+ MSRP DSLR models. i'm sure your Dreb is lacking nothing to Sony's point-and-shoot models. that said, the Sony's DO have quicker autofocus when comparing point-and-shoot models.
