A story, and then a plea for help!
Well about two years ago, I entered the home theater speaker realm. I became obsessed with the reproduction of sound. I began listening to any and every speaker out there. You name it, paradigm, energy, B&W, athena, atlantic tech, martin logan, and many others I can't recall at this moment.
Anyways- I realized soon, that even though I liked two channel, I liked great Home theater as well, however my funds weren't as amazing as I would wish they were.
My friend was showing a movie at a local church. We went to the church and to my suprise the speakers were polk audio. I remember listening to the LSI's, and remembered how great they were. These speakers however, were not LSI's, they were some sort of monitors, and by quick judgement I thought to myself, that these speakers probably suck all. To my shock, they actually performed very well. After the movie, we spent some time listening to some good ole jazz.
Now about a year and a half later, I've come to ask, I am on a budget for home theater, yet I want to reproduce the same home theater enviornment in that room. My freind told me the church went all out on the center channel, but the fronts were monitors. I don't remember any models.
In about 700 dollars, I'm willing to also do Ebay, Audiogon, or whatever, could I make a setup for my home theater? I find myself as I'm getting caring more and more about soundstage, then alot of things. Thanks alot guys!
I guess I should point out, Home theater comes first, two channel secondary.

Is your $700 budget for speakers only? If you already have a receiver, I'd suggest taking your time on building your HT system and purchasing the best fronts you can afford. You can add a center channel and rear speakers later.
Do you recall what the Polk monitors looked like? Perhaps we can help you identify the model that you were intriuged with.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Well 700 for speakers. The reciever I figure I'll go do a digital reciever sort of thing. As for center channel, I'm scowering audiogon, becuase on occasion a CSi5 can be found for around 300 or less.

There is an Athena 5.1 system w/ subwoofer for sale in the flea market that could certainly tide you over....plus save you some money.
Good luck in whatever you end up doing.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
For $700, you *could* probably score 2 pairs of LSi7. I remember one guy was selling the 7s here at the fleamarket for $350 a pair. On ebay, they go to about $400-450 a pair, depending on the time of day of the auction and the person selling.
You could also go with some RTi speakers. Perhaps an RTi8 for fronts and RTi4 or RTi6 for rears on ebay should cost about $800 or so, give or take a $100.
Just stretch out the $700 budget a little, knowing that you will be living with these speakers for quite some time.Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R
