Just bought a new pair of RTi10s and when I got them home and hooked them up and "got on them" they didn't seem to have the same "snap" from in the show room when I picked them out. I'm running the same power as what they used on the amp in the store -100 watts per channel mains. (Yamaha RX-V2095) I called the salesman to see if I needed an external amp and he said its because they're not broken in yet ~ the speakers need a 48 hour break-in period. Being as the speaker manual doesn't say anything about a break-in period, is he pulling my leg?
Receiver - Yamaha RX-A2020

Some believe in it, some dont - depends on what you want to believe.

Room acoustics might be playing a role here, changing the sound. Every speaker sounds a lil different - better or worse - from the showroom to when it goes in your room.

For what it's worth, I used to own a pair of RTi10's powered by a separate amp of 205 wpc. They provided some serious kick. especially for movies.

And yes, most speakers need time to break in, but the change may not be a substantial one for those speakers. I'd start with checking the crossover settings in the receiver (i.e., are they set to SMALL or LARGE??), toying with placement, and considering external amplification.

Niice choice on the RTi10s! Those speakers are definitely kick ars! Breaking in is something I do not believe in. I think its more of your brain getting used to the sound rather than the sound changing over time.

Through experience, you'll find that the break-in period for speakers is more apparent with higher quality components and cables.

Cables... another touchy subject. Some swear by it, others dont.

Thanks for the input, I checked the bass management and experimented with mains on small and large with a powered sub woofer (Mirage MS12 100 watt) I wonder if they'll get more power if I use the base management and turn the LFE to just sub woofer 'cause it's currently on both the main and sub. I plan on getting an external amp. someday Im not sure of what type to get. My system is currently set up with the receiver (Yamaha RX-V2095) A speakers going to my mains (RTi10s) and the B going to an AD COM4 speaker selector, which then runs to rec room, kitchen, patio and garage. (we never run more than 2 channels at once on the AD COM). For external amp would I get 2 separate 2 channels or (1) 4 channel?
I had a stereo store tell me hook up the AD COM to the A speakers and not use the B speakers at all. I don't know what this would do but I feel that I'm losing the use of a set of speakers hooking it up this way. I feel the mains should have their own power source. Is this right? Thanx!

I think you'll find most speakers benefit from "break-in." I noticed an improvement in bass with mine after about a month, and it wasn't subtle. In my experience, tweeters will usually smooth out too, with some playing time.

I'm not so sure that cables and other electronic equipment need break-in time of more than a couple hours, but speakers are an electro/mechanical device, and the rubber surrounds do tend to limber up a bit with time.

Regarding the speaker surrounds (and the woofers in general) limbering up after break in... well, I've read that they DO limber up after usage, BUT return back to the same stiffness (as when brand new) when turned off. They limber up everytime you turn them on, if that's any consolation.

I believe in speaker breakin more than cable breaking from a mechanical standpoint but how much the specs change before and after is the question. Cables IMHO is slightly changed at interface points like the connectors(spades) or the dielectric contact with the metal. nuff on that for now;)

I would shut the sub completely off for any critical listening and evaluation and set the front to large. Get acquainted with your new speakers and figure out what the room is doing to ya. For some slam with movies go ahead and play with the sub and get used to how it blends with your fronts.

I would go with Outlaw mono blocks. I have the 770 and and it sounds GREAT for both movies and multichannel audio. the reason I say mono is that I have 2 unused amps right now because I have no desire to go 6 or 7 channel. Give them a test drive and you have 30 days to send them back with no obligation.

Thanks for the offer on the amps "HBombToo"; but, I'm going to hang out in the polk forum for several months and see what every one is using, besides my first goal with available income
is to get rid of my Radio Shack surround speakers and get some FXi3`s or FXi5`s.
    Thanks

I would suggest more power, you will not get the full usage of rti10 with 100 watts, if you turn up your amp past 1'o clock you could pump in enough distortion to harm them. Perhaps you want to read up on this on Polk's site, and yes do break 'em in too

    Hope I helped
