okay so this was suppose to be the big weekend to bi wire my 800i's.. but instead spent an hour + just getting the cap drilled out from the 5 way binding posts.
first off. the cap itself came off flawlessly. but that wasn't the end of it.. then you have to drill out the center core of the darn thing.

Before I had the speakers hooked up using bare wires.. not a problem. then got the brilliant idea of why don't I bi wire them with banana plugs to save time and they'll look better too. Well easier said than done.

After you remove the plastic cap you then have to drill out the center core. if you don't.. it will sink down then you won't be able to use bare wires or banana plugs. It's screwed up!

I know why the caps are there..for the European market.. but for the US market.. why not sell them without the caps? For the sake of my sanity... rethink this for future US sales.
peace, now where are my drill bits?

all you do is pop off the cap, screw the plastic 'clamp' down as far as it goes, and plug in your banana's. i don't know what you were drilling out???

I'm telling you... i nearly had to use a jackhammer to get those suckers out of there.
i got a screw and screwed in into the top of the black cover on the binding posts.. the cap came off very easy.. but then the core that is about a 1/2 inch long was still lodged in there.. so i had to get the drill out and break it down to nothing but small bits of plastic. it worked. now my speakers are bi-wired. they actually sound a little better than before. a little more open and spacious sound field.

anyway, it's a done deal. but beware of the caps on those suckers. On yeah i also did the CS400i while I was at it. once get it down. it's really easy.

You're giving me the giggles; but I guess the important thing is that it now works to your satisfaction. Personally, I plan on using some variety of torch to get my 800i's caps off, I'll let you know how it goes down.

I guess it's good that I have the old school RT800's. No caps, no drilling, just stick 'em in. Then again, maybe my banana manhood is just no match for the binding post..... :D

Are you mad? Why would you ever drill into your speakers? I hope you didn't hurt them!

Well, as long as it works, I guess you got the job accomplished. Good job!

When I insert my bannana plugs into my 800i binding posts, the don't go all the way, thus leaving part of the bannana plug shaft exposed, I can't get it inserted all the way (but it's secure enough) - is this going to be a problem or a detriment to the sound quality?

The reason they don't go in all the way is that I removed the flat gold plated bridge that came with the speakers and used 12 awg wire to bridge the 4 bind posts - which is a tweak that was recommended in a review

Actually I am mad! ha ha ha.

I'm sure you all think i've lost my mind. sometimes I think i have. but, maybe mine was an isolated incident. i removed the caps.. but on MY speakers there was a core that is or was attached to the cap. that did not always come off with the cap. so how do you get it out of there? so i thought about using a small drill bit and grind the hell out of the black plastic core thingy. Wha la, it worked like a charm. If anyone out there in Polkland has not removed the caps from their RT800i's please do so and let me know how it goes. I know there is a core that is inserted where the banana plugs to. And no it did no damage to the binding posts at all. I went slow and only drilled into the core enough to pull it out. I guess the cap broke off of the core. maybe thats why i had to use the jackhammer.. er drill.

Hey DangerBoy! did you recommend Steiner Electronics in Idaho" If so thanks I bought my fx500i's from them and they were great to deal with. another polkster who was waiting for Brandnamez to deliver also bought his there. I would recommend them to others as well.
regarding the posts dont feel to foolish I was wondering how they could call them five way posts when you could not use the top! So by your post i found out that the buggers come out! but in the event that you buy anymore polks just use a mini screwdriver and pry it out that way you can leave the hard hat in the garage!

Yes The Old Gaffer, I did recommend Steiner Electronics in Idaho. They are good folks to deal with. I purchased my sub from them. They are about 90 miles from Spokane where I live. So it's a bit of a haul. But worth it. They are a small high end stereo store in a small town, but they know there stuff. They move a lot of Polk speakers in their little store. The store manager helped me himself when I was there last year and bought my sub.

BTW, how do you like your new FX/500i's? I have mine set to bi-polar and they sound great.
    happy listening!
