Headphone recommendations?

I need a decent set of headphones for the new comp. I bought a pair of Maxell headphones today, but they sound like crap. No bass, sorta scratchy sound, they simply suck. Our computer is in the kitchen, next to the living room, so I can't get a good speaker/sub setup. It would drown out the wife's precious TV viewing. So, I need something with fairly good bass response, and I'd like to keep it under $50, if possible.

I did upgrade to a Sound Blaster Live sound card today, which, is an improvement over the mobo sound. I still need to upgrade the video card, though. In a month or 2. I'm fairly content with my Radeon 9000 for the moment. As long as I keep the resolution at 800x600, everything runs smoothly.

I'd fork out a little money for some Sennheisers, but they're probably going to run you more than $50. Try the HD212 Pro.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-280s that I like. They are sealed, so nobody around you will hear your tunes. Better sounding that all of the higher-end Sony cans I've tried. I've seen them for as low as $85 on the 'net.

I agree....I have these also...got them on sale for around $75 and I like them very much. On par with the Grado 60s and 80s I demoed, IMO.

I prefer Grado's... nice and dynamic. There's something about the Sennheisers that just don't cut the mustard for their price.

If you have $600 lying around... the top of the line Shure ear buds are simply amazing.

I'll throw a recomendation for AKG K240, replacable input cord, pretty sensitive, good dynamics and range, etc. I love em, They're very comfortable, I've fallen asleep with them, and my ears didn't hurt after doing so, they aren't fatiguing at all.
    Enough of the sales pitch.
I would suggest going to a music store, they should have a place where they sell studio monitors and such, you should be able to try out many headphones there. Good luck with your search,

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I'll be trying out some Sennheiser's. Hmmm, sounds German...

Check out the headphones for sale section at head-fi.org if you aren't opposed to used cans.

Kenwood used to make some nice headphones. I have had 3 sets, two of the same 'cause an ex-girlfriend sat on my fist pair and the 3rd set I still have. They are an open air design but still have a full ear cup. They have excellent response and I'd place on a level of the mid-line Sennheisers or Grados. I only paid about $45 for them. I don't know if Kenwood still makes headphones. Thier website is down. If they do, and you can find them, they are worth looking at.

For under $50.00, there're 2 sets of Sennheiser headphones that you should consider....the PX100 and the PX200.

The PX100 will allow you to hear sound from the outside and it will also give you better bass response. It's also the European "headphone of the year" 2 years running. The PX200 is a closed design, so it will give you some isolation. To my ears, the PX200 is smoother sounding. Both need extensive burn-in....about 80 hours or so. And both should be available for about $40.00.
