Ex-Packers lineman Reggie White dies at 43
By Boston.com | December 26, 2004

Defensive lineman Reggie White, who terrorized quarterbacks for the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, has died of a massive heart attack at age 43, according to ESPN.

Reporter Andrea Kremer said that since leaving he game, he had suffered through his wife's diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, and had been studying Hebrew in a search to better clarify his religious beliefs.

He left his wife, a son and a daughter. The family issued a statement thanking fans and reporters for their thoughts and asking that their privacy be respected.

White was nicknamed the "Minister of Defense" for his football prowess and his Evangelical Christian ordination.

A prolific sacker, he set records at the University of Tennessee that still stand. After school, he signed on with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL for two seasons, then joined the Eagles when the USFL folded. In 1993, after eight seasons in Philadelphia, he went to Green Bay for six seasons and helping them to two Super Bowls, including a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.

After retiring in 1998, he had a change of heart and signed with the Carolina Panthers for the 2000 season, but retired again after a lackluster performance that year.

I had just heard James Brown on Fox say that his wife told him it was a respiratory issue as a result of sleep apnia (sp?) that cost him his life while he slept. Does anyone know if it was a heart attack or that? :(

Drafted by Eagles in 1984, Packers signed him as a Free Agent in 1993, helped them to the Super Bowl in 1996, 'retired' in 1998. Went to play for the Panthers for one season in 2000 and retired again after that season. He was living in NC.

You might be thinking of Randy White, 1975-1988.

Sad news, both the Asian tragedy and Reggie. 21000 killed is the latest news in Asia.

Never heard of the guy, but to die at 43, that sucks-****. Wonder what brought it on? That's a very young to die of a heart attack.

Sad news. Rest in peace Reggie. From seeing him in interviews and in games, he seemed like a pretty nice guy. I also heard that he was a minister.
Is it just me or did anyone else think that he was older than 43? I remember watching him when I was pretty young.

    :(

He was an amazing guy. I have a personal story to tell about his kindness, but I'd rather let it go untold because he was never the type to try to gain praise from being a decent human being.

sleep apnea (especially bad cases) has been known to put a tremendous strain on the heart. i have heard no official reports, but this seems like a sound theory in this case, either way, a trmendous loss.

and the death toll is just not going to stop in asia. 68000 and climbing, not including the future loss of life from disease and whatnot because of the tragedy (cholera, dysentery, Malaria, and many others). a truly devestating event.
