Been a long while since I purchased a new reciever, after long hard research I went with a Denon AVR-3805 and WOW I am very pleased, It was a bit complicated for me to setup at first but after READING the manual it was actually easy, Lots of functions and features. I am now looking into purchasing the POLK RTi12 to compliment this nice reciever, anyhoot just my 2 cents, BTW I love the on screen menu and the remote.

Welcome to the forum and glad to hear you like your new purchase. Are you going to go with a 2 channel only setup, or plans for surround/home theater setup later?
-
surround is the way I want to go, Any suggestions, I have a MK v-30 sub ,infinity center and Bose cubes, I will be phasing out ALL speakers and replacing with nice ones, except for the sub, I will add another one of those. But I am definitely open to suggestions on speaker setup.
Thanks -

600.00 center
1,500.00 fronts
1,000.00 rears
1,000.00 Sub
This is what I am willing to spend on a setup -
Wow, nice buget. For that kind of loot, you can set up a phenomenal HT system. If you're gonna do RTi12's in the front, you can get a Csi40 or Csi5 for the center channel ($200 - $400); and RTi38's, FXi30's, RTi8's or RTi10's for the rear ($200 - $1,000). Spend the whole grand on the sub.
Once you do that, you'll have money to spare. Just make sure you allow $300 plus for decent speaker wire and interconnects.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

First of all, congrats for the new purchase. Unfortunately your Denon 3805 has not enough power to drive RTi12's at there best. If you're going to spend grand on a Sub then you don't need RTi12's. Get RTi8's instead and spend on a quality sub. Quality sub will provide better bass than RTi12's. Or get RTi12's and forget about sub and spend on a quality 2-ch amp.
In any case if you decide to go RTi12, you must need an amplifier to power to those hungry woofers in RTi12's.
Just my 2 cents!

Actually, given his budget, he may be able to take some of the $$ from the center and surround portion, and buy an outboard 2-channel amp to drive the front mains using the preamp outs on the 3805. In terms of bang-for-the-buck, look at Crown, QSC, and Crest pro-audio amps.
Then he'll have the best of all worlds: surround and a nice power reserve for 2-channel listening... -
Thanks for the info, I will not be getting the RTi12's now, I found a SVS PB12-ultra/2 sub that I am intrested in, If I was to go with a 2 channel amp can I connect it to my reciever to give me more power ? If so where on the reciever would I connect it ? And what kind of amp would you suggest ?
Thanks -
I agree that the 12s may not be the best choice for HT use since during setup you may find that you prefer all channels set to small and let your big sub handle the LFE. Many here and in other forums find their mains and surrounds sound best set this way unless you are in a huge theater room, thus the 3 woofers in the 12s are kinda overkill.
If you want the 12s for 2 channel music, with a dedicated high current amp, used without a sub, then I would still get the 12s.
Great choice of the 3805 for an HT processor, it is one of the best around, and since it has preamp outs for every channel, it has room to grow.
Welcome to CP!!

Great info guys, I do thank everybody for there input as to I am just getting into HT, I want to do it right , What would be ideal for a room 24 by 16 ?
Thanks

That is a nice size room and the SVS you have chosen will pressurize the room nicely with quality bass. If I was looking at all channels to have pretty equal power handling, I would choose 10s or 8s for the mains, a CSi5 for the center and FXi5s for sides and RTi 6s for the rears or another set of FXi5s.
This would make a great 7.1 setup. You will always have the ability to add a 2 channel or 3 channel amp with 150-200 solid watts for the fronts and center if needed.
With 7 channels of sound, I found my Harman Kardon 7200 to be plenty in a room of similar size, since I set all channels to small and have dual 12 inch Adire Shivas for lots of bottom end.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

If you are looking at separate amplifiers for the front, have you thought about the LSi series? They fall well within your budget if you go with 5.1 surround, and you might be able to scrape them in if you go 6.1 or 7.1. Rough estimates on prices would be LSi15's for $1300(although Lsi9's at $800 would work since you are getting a sub). LSFXi's for $800. LSiC for $450. LSi7's for the rear at $600. The rears could be driven by your Denon, but the fronts would do better with a separate amplifier.
Just suggestions, not decisions.Tschüss

Zach is right about the LSi series being nice! They are better for music in most instances too.
Either way you go, Polk has a great value for the money spent.

Great, If you're not getting RTi12's then I assume RTi8's. Once you get your speakers and sub then set all speakers to small and cross them at 80hz (THX) and then anything below 80hz your sub will take.
That's all you need for now to enjoy your HT!
At the back of your 3805 there is set of rca jack outputs says [PRE OUT] which is designed to connect external amps and bypass the internal ones in your Denon. You need analog interconnects to connect an amplier and then hook your speakers to the amp's binding posts. Once you do that you denon becomes a preamplier/processor.
Amps have true power rating and lot of high current to drive speakers which improves sound quality by far and you can play your system close to the REF levels while maintaining sound quality.

Yep, but the folks are going to be coming to West Memphis to see our new addition. I don't think the three of us are ready for a 10 hour trip to Western Oklahoma yet. Our plans right now are to come to OK in March when I have spring break. I'll let you know when we come so I can come visit and watch a movie or two.Tschüss

I see the RCA jacks you are talking about, There is a set for for all speakers, center, fronts, etc, Cool, What would be a descent 2 channel amp ? And would the RTi12s be good for HT ?I really do like them but are they over kill for a HT setup ?

I like the looks of a solid tower speaker too. The 12s are pretty powerfull looking speaks!
Parasound's HCA -1500 is a great amp that can be added. Pricing is $700 to $900.
A couple of Outlaw Audio Monoblocks would be $600 and give 200 watts per side also.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

Yes, RTi12's are good for HT, but they still can't beat the performance of a quality dedicated sub. The SVS sub you're planning to have will provide greater output and more low end extension. Also the large driver(s) of sub push more air than the ones in RTi12s, simply no comparison. If you love loud, deep and clean bass get the sub and never look back. If you're purist and serious about bass and love movies then get the sub.
Remember there are some serious bass notes which goes below 20hz and RTi12's can't do that at all.
Go with RTi8's and the sub!

overkill? nope. there is no such thing as overkill
go with your gut feeling.. you can always return the RTi12's in a couple weeks if you feel they are overkill.
with audio.. it's my theory that it's better to have speakers, amps, gear that can do what you want with ease and have headroom to spare.. as opposed to gear that is underpowered and you expect it to do more than it was designed to do.
hope that makes sense.
congrats on your Denon 3805. i've been eyeing that same unit myself.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Let me add a differing opinion than others regarding the fronts. Get as much bass in the front as possible and run them on LARGE along with a sub. I recently upgraded my fronts to speakers that go very low. IMO, this extra bass offers a fantastic HT experience.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I agree with EB, providing the cost of the speakers are not a whole lot more. Even if they are crossed over at 80 HZ, the 12s will still outperform the 8s.
