In response to those inquisitive minds who want to know what my DA4ES is not doing for me. Well, it's not really an issue of what it's NOT doing for me, but rather what more can a different receiver do for me...ya know? I had written to Ken a little over a week ago and asked what name brand receivers were most suitable to my speakers (RTi6) and he suggested NAD as being one of them. Some others he mentioned were Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha etc. NAD just happens to be the one among those that I became quite interested in after reading a glorious review of the T-753 in Home Theater Magazine.
See...the 4ES is my first mid to high end receiver and it does wonderful job, but I still need to experiment to see what's out there. In other words, I'm quite satisfied with my 4ES, but if there's something out there that works better with my speakers, then bring it on!!

did anyone ever buy the Outlaw 950 preamp?
there was some buzz about this pre a few years ago.. but now i don't hear anymore about it. ANyone here own one? what do you think if you do?

I have a Sony too, have been very pleased with the processing,
reliability, and it's two sets of multi-channel inputs. However, when I added my Carver tfm-35x 250 watts x 2 power amp to the front main speakers my system went to another level. It really opened up those front speakers.
If you want to hear a difference try adding a seperate power amp,
try to find something that can handle the full power rating of your speakers. Borrow one from a friend, or audition one from a retail store for the weekend and see what you think.JmasterJ Polk to the Death -
A receiver is a combination of a processor, an amplifier, and a tuner all in the same box sharing a common power supply. Separates are individual components. Pre-amp for sound processing, volume control, and source selection. An amplifier, well it does nothing more than amplify the signal it receives from the pre-amp. Note that many pre-amps are also equipped with a tuner as well. Separates are the next level of audio gear, individual components sound and perform better because they do only 1 job and are generally built better than receivers. Yes there are a few 950 owners on this board. There are some that have tried the 950 and didn't care for it, and others that are very pleased with the performance. Hopefully a few owners will chime in and offer a review. Jstas was looking at a 950, not sure if he ever got one or not. -
I had a Sony 444ES that got hit by lightning. Instead of getting a new receiver I opted for the Rotel 1068 pre pro and 1075,1070 power amps. There was no comparasion in sound quality. Although I really liked my Sony, The Rotel gear is much better (and more expensive too). If 2 channel is important to you, than seperates might be the way to go.

Cool, gotcha.
Now do they actually perform better or just allow much more flexibility and a greater ability to customize and fine tune your system.
Kind of like in car audio, you can run one amp channel to a mid and tweet, or you can bi-amp and run a seperate amp channel to each tweet and mid. This in and of itself doesnt sound better but it does allow greater flexibility in tuning which in turn sounds better.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

IMO, yes they do perform better, much better. I've used both and to my ears seperates are the way to go.
