Am I set up wrong

I am not getting much sound out of my rear speakers and I am wondering if it is the combination I have. My front speakers are RT 1000P,s Center is cs 400i and rears are LS 55. When I balance them they seem to match. But there is little feedback when played with a movie on the back speakers.

Would this work better by replacing the rt 1000's with say ls 90 or 70's or should i replace the LS 55's with some LS/FX surrounds

Have you calibrated with a SPL meter?

If not, they can be had at radioshack...

Yes I have done that, did not seem to matter. I have even raised the volume much higher in the rears and still does not come through that well.

What type of source are you using to determine you have little sound coming from the rears? DVD? TV? Something else? I am not familiar with Yamaha, but you may have set up issue with the receiver or your DVD player? We need a little more info.

Everything runs through the Yamaha RX-V 995 and when you test it through the unit everything is equal.

It is when you play a movie or other source that does not seem to play the rears enough to really tell a difference.

The Sat System is about a year old and does connect directly to the receiver. It is a Zenith HD-SAT 520 digitial.

Front speakers are RT 1000 Centers CS 400 Rears are LS 55's

Ok, assuming you have the wires connecting correctly.

The rear speakers are not going to have as much material played through them as your fronts or center. They are designed to add ambiance to the overall soundtrack. There will be some transient sounds specifically recorded for a surround speaker such as a gunshot that will be localized to it and is intended to be heard as coming from the direction of the speaker.

Set the receiver's DSP mode to Dolby Digital surround.

Play an ordinary satellite channel the receiver display will likely say Dolby Pro Logic or Pro logic II depending on your receiver. If it says Dolby Pro Logic you will not be hearing much sound coming from your rears this is pretty much normal, Dolby Pro Logic II, I hear you get more, cant say cuz I dont have it.

Change to a satellite movie channel broadcasting a movie in dolby digital (if you have a movie channel doing this you will see the logo in the satellite menu) the receiver display should say Dolby Digital or something like that. If not reread your manual for hookup. The receiver is not recognizing/processing the dolby digital signals. Do you have the satellite receiver connected with some sort of digital cable? Have you told your audio receiver in the set up to look for it?

Put a dolby digital soundtrack DVD disc in your player, switch the receiver to dvd, hit the display top menu (may be called something else on your player) key for your dvd, you should see amongst the information displayed something like 3/2.1 or such, if you see 2.0 or 2.1 you need to do set up in your dvd player menu. Make sure the disc has Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack or you are going to get very frustrated and start calling me and everyone around you names. Same questions how is it connected to the receiver, you need it connected digitally either coax or optical connection, and you need to tell the receiver where to look for or to accept the digital signal, it is in your manual. If you are using the red and white cables from the box you are not going to get the digital surround signal. Your receiver will likely display dolby digital in the display window on the receiver.

Now because you said you calibrated and everything plays correctly with the test tones seems it is some sort of set up issue.

I own the 520 and its a very good receiver but you need to connect the TOS Link to your AVR. In your 520 menu ensure you have Dolby Dig enabled and not the PCM. When you see the DD symbol on the channel guide for the HD or Movie channels your AV receiver should show its picking up the DD.

If you are set to PCM or your not connected with the TOS Link(using the analog L/R outputs) you won't get the DD stream from the 520 and you'll be reliant on the Dolby Pro Logic circuits of the AV receiver. If that is the case then your surrounds will not give you the boom your expecting.

there are a few of us around the forums here.

I can't really add anything else that the other guys have already. Other than to just once again mention. that your surrounds will not be as loud as your fronts.. they are just there for rear channel effects.

but it sounds like you may have other problems with some kind of set up menu switch you may need to turn on.

also.. when using a SPL meter use a set up DVD instead of the receivers built in tone generator. it'll give you a more accurate level.

you've spent how much $$ on gear and speakers and you can't afford a $50 SPL? ok
