HELP, with speakers and sub

Hi, can anyone help me? Assume I know NOTHING about speakers please! (reply like you would to a 5 year old.
I just bought the polk PSW 10 sub, the monitor 70's and the csi5 center speaker (that one was floor model).
1) the center and monitors - why are there 2 sets of speaker wire input jacks? the small manual photo that came with the speakers does little to show how to hook this up!
(Very frustrating for money spent on these!)
I just hooked my speaker wire up to the top ones and made sure that the gold plate was secured to both the top and bottom input jacks... Is this the right thing to do???
2) The sub woofer back is not like the back that the manual shows. My new reciever (Denon AVR985s, the best the store I shoped at had...) has ONE port out for the sub, so its like only plugging one single RCA plug into it.
HOWEVER, there are two ports on the back of the sub labeled L and R. The manual shows there to be a single pure port labeled "LFE IN (unfiltered)" but there is no single port like this on my sub... Do I just get a Y splitter?
3) Can I use another 2 Y Splitters off the back of the single RCA cable to run to my new polk sub and my old yamaha sub at the same time? I have heard yes that the Harmen Kardens can run even 4 subs but not sure if thats special situation or not...
Thanks for any help, trying not to destroy these nice speakers in my first week ...

First off Welcome...second...relax....this is just the start.......
1- You did it right doesn't matter which one as long as the connections are tight.
2-You can buy a Y splitter or plug it in any RCA in the back of the sub
3- Yes you can do that as well but stick with your polk sub for now....do you have surrounds ?
good luck and enjoy
