Taking the plunge

So I've decided that I think it's about time to get myself a nice little, or not so little, system started inside, cause I don't want good sound JUST in my car. I want to start of with a nice two-channel set-up for now, then work my way up to a 5.1 or whatever HT system. So any advice as far as speakers, amps, preamps, etc would be appreciated. It will also be hooked up to the tv for better sound from moves, etc., but the tv will not be upgraded. It's older and only has inputs for cable and one set of RCA's, video and mono audio. I'd like to keep the price not too high, but don't want anything crappy either. Also something to keep in mind for any recomendations, I can get a 30% discount on anything Radioshack carries (Onkyo, Sony, etc.), a 60% discount on Monster products, and discounts on some other company's products, not sure which, or how much, it usually works out to be about cost+10%.

This is going to be tough. Are you more serious about movies or music? A system that will do great on both 2ch and multichannel will be very expensive. You can still enjoy your movies with 2ch. A good 2ch integrated and a pair of LSi or RTi will sound great. You can also look at different brands of speakers. We need more info like your budget and the kind of sound you're looking for.

I don't really have a set budget. I don't mind spending money on quality components, just means it will take me a bit longer to get them. To keep the cost down for now, seeing as I do have other things to take care of, I want to go with a two channel set-up for now, with a sub. Then in the future, when more money comes in, and more space, be able to upgrade to a multi-channel.

The speakers you should listen to yourself, ideally you'd want to listen to everything yourself but this system or heart of a good system in the making would destroy anything you could buy at or near the prices you'd pay for this stuff that's a couple years old.
