I have a Pioneer VSX-D811S, not the best but it does a lot of stuff well. Although i will eventually replace it, its what ive got for the short term and was wondering what the harm would be in running the LSi9's on it for a few months, not even everyday use, and not for very long periods of time.

Im going to get an outlaw amp and pre/pro setup in a few months but would like to get the speakers now,

So what do you think would i do any damage to speakers or reciever for only short term occasional use.

BTW the reciever is rated at 8 ohms.

It should be OK if you use it only at low volumes.

what is the potenital harm, is it the speakers or the reciever that gets damaged when you donw have speakers and reciever matched for ohm rating?

The receiver will typically go into protect mode (temporarily shut down) because it is working too hard to power speakers that it wasn't designed to drive.

It should actually be OK for most listening...HT receivers typically are only rated at 8 and 6 ohms to avoid raising eyebrows at UL. It'll run a bit hot running 4 ohms, just give it good ventilation. Manufacturers try to spend as little on heat sinking as they can and still pass UL regulations. If it gets warmer than you're comfortable with, buy a quiet 120V muffin fan and plop it on top to draw air up and through the receiver's interior. Placing the unit on 4 hockey pucks helps wth cooling, too.

It should be fine unless you listen at very high volume levels. I have my LSi9s hooked up to my Harman Kardon AVR330 receiver (8ohm nominal) and I can crank it to obnoxious levels. As long as your receiver is of good quality, you should be fine.

I wont be going separates for atleast another year or so.

Ha Ha. If you hang around the forum long enough, your timetable for moving into separates will be drastically altered. (HINT: there's an Adcom 545 in the Flea Market that has your name written all over it.....)
