I have a pair of early Polk Monitor 7s (Yes, from Soundscape) . Does anyone know the nominal impedance. (I just got a Sansui receiver that has an impendance switch.)

    Welcome to the forum,

I believe they are nominal 6 ohms.

One of the experts will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong.

Negative, if they are the original 7's, they would be 6 ohms.

I thought only the 10 was 6 ohms (presumably 'cause the mid/woofers were in parallel)!?

I'll check my old brochure tonight if I remember and if I get a chance.

I think these are the originals, but I cannot be certain. This brochure has the Wetheredsville Road address, but I don't know whether that was before or after Carey St.

It depends on which model of monitor 7 that it is. I used to have the Monitor 7C (1985) which uses the MW6502 driver. The driver is rated at 4 ohm. When tested through the crossover it is 4 ohm as well. My Monitor 5 JR++ speakers use the MW6502 too and they are rated at 4 ohm. Not only does the old Polk advertisments show that they are 4 ohm, but you can also test them with an ohm meter which I have. All of the Polk speakers I have ever had were 4 ohm speakers. The only ones that were not were the Monitor 10's which are 6 ohm. Something really odd is the fact that I see Polk listing a lot of their vintage speakers as being 8 ohm when in fact they are 4 ohm. You can test them for yourself. Polks old advertisments state the truth with the 4 ohm rate. Polk has also been advertising on their website that most of their new speakers like the RTi line are 8 ohm when IN FACT THEY ARE 4 OHM! My RTi 4's were 4 OHM when I tested them. A lot of people run away when they hear the 4 ohm rate because most mainstream receivers only run 8 ohm speakers. I think that is why Polk is saying the BS line about the speakers being 8 ohm.

Well, I have an RTi70 manual that says they are 4 ohm, and I know that's a crock. Make you wonder who writes this stuff.

I have another point to make about the picture of the M7 and Monitor 10 above. Those are the REALLY old ones and they don't have near the power of the later models. The later models of the Monitor 7 are rated at 150 per channel which is also suposed to be a continuous rating. The later Monitor 10 is rated at 250 watts per channel. These are much more powerful than the speakers above! Again the ohm rating of the later Monitor 7's is 4 ohm. The 10's are 6 ohm

Do you mean it says they are 8 ohm? I tested my friends RTi 70's and they were rated at 4 ohm. I called Polk and they said they were 6 ohm. They never get their facts straight!

The first set I bought came with a manual that said the RTi28, 38, and 70 were all "Nominal 4ohm". The manual that came with another set, along with the manual available for download, says "Compatible with 8ohm outputs". The specifications on the web page says "Nominal Impedance 8 ohms". Who knows!?

The I dunno, part number (?), for the first manual that says 4 ohm is RMO366-1. The part number for the manual that lists them as 8 ohm compatible is RMO366-2.

Hey doro, look.....facts........ I know, your impressed right? Hehe

Sowen - lol, yaman, love it.

Polkfreak - I know I have passed over a set of Mon7's that were 6 ohm as well....but they were the real original one's. It is odd that the Polk information in this line is so varied and inconsistent.

The later models may have had a higher power handling capacity, but don't sound as good as the originals in any way shape or form, IMO.

The vintage section of this site is far from accurate, and we have voiced our thoughts about it over and over, but it just isn't important enough to address formally. We have even offered to help, although I don't think there is much direct help we can offer.

When I saw , "compatable with 8 ohm outputs" the first thing that came to my mind was the fact that they were 4 ohm and they could be used on an 8 ohm receiver, but at lower volume levels. That is what I thought they were trying to say by that.
