Usually the sub has a default plug (mine is the left channel). I just hook up the single line, and it works really well. No difference if I attach the right.
As for crossover, I leave it deactivated. My AV receiver already has it crossed over depending on the other speaker setups (big speaks, 1 setting...small speaks, another setting). The only thing I mess around with is the subwoffer levels. I usually bring it down for music, and crank it up for movies...Movies have the extra coding for the sub.
I don't have your specific sub...so someone else may have a rebuttal. -
here is some good reading material......

ultimately, there really isn't a "right" or "wrong" way....whatever sounds best to you, don't be afraid to experiment.

boy the 800 500 400 velo is very popular how big is your room? i have the same setup and my room is 25 by 15. dues it say what the sup outs are in the manunel? if you have 2 of them all you need to do is get a y cabble and a sub cabble and hook the sub out to the cabble it might not matter then use the y cabble to hook to the velodyne and turn off the x-over on the sub and have fun.
