Sounds like an interesting film. I am not aware of any recent movie based on the classic Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdom", but if he can get that cast together....Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li, Tony Leung, Gong Li, and Zhang Ziyi.....

Haven't been a big fan of John Woo. Nothing wrong with trying something new but I think he should stick with his strengths and return to his "Hard Boiled" days.

The director of "Hero" and "HoFD" wasn't exactly known to be an expert in directing this particular genre either. However, John Woo, before making a name for himself (and Chow Yun-fat) with the "A Better Tomorrow" series or "Hard Boiled", was the director of the Chinese opera classic "Princess Chang Ping". I hope those big sleeves don't hide some semi-automatic pistols. :D

What I like about Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOFD) is his ability to truly convey the emotion of his films for the audience. Whether it be something sad, remorseful, joyful, etc. He's first a dramatic director and sees action films from a different perspective.

He picks his actors carefully even if it has to be an unknown actor. Also his musical scores are often hauntingly beautiful.

For Woo, although I haven't seen many of his films but one thing universal I've seen is his "style". The dance of gun play, the view from the end of a gun barrel and the "flying doves". It's definitely all style but just no substance. :(

His wishlist for actors is quite ambitious. Doubtful he'll get all of them but (imo) it's his first step in the wrong direction. It's like he's wants who's "hot" right now and not "who or who isn't gonna make this film work".

Though when all is said and done Danny- I hope I'm wrong and John Woo has made me a believer in this project ! :)

Very ambitious casts indeed! I hope they have deep pocket to pay the casts.
