Full Screen

I'd just like to express my extreme disdain for my local video rental place. I went out last night and rented Master and Commander which for some reason I never went and watched, and I had heard there were a couple of good scenes in there to test out the ole surround system.

I was shocked that they even CREATED a full-screen version for this movie... and not only that, but the video store I went to ONLY HAD the full screen!! The widescreen wasn't just rented out - they DIDN'T STOCK IT. I almost didn't bother renting it at all... I mean, a sillly comedy or something I can see having a full screen version, but something like Master and Commander, where you really NEED the full shot in a lot of scenes.... sickening. I can't imagine some of the stuff that was cut out....

End of rant :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah I know. Full screen SUCKS! You might need to get this in wide screen to enjoy it better. I wanted to send my fiance' back to the store one day because she got a Full Screen version of a movie. I ended up taking it back myself. You would be amazed at the amount of picture you miss out on. What I did one day was, I took a movie that contained both WS and FS on the same disc and it was missing a lot! Switch back and forth and watch the same scene. You'd be amazed.

All I have is a Full Screen TV...

I show the same disdain you do, but for widescreen (that is, until I get a widescreen TV) :p

C'mon Sid. I only have a fullscreen TV too, but BELIEVE ME, it's worth having those two bars on the top and bottom for waht you miss out of a good movie.

Look at some of the examples on this webpage : http://www.widescreen.org/examples.shtml

    You'll never rent / buy a "full-screen" movie again.

And guess what, even with a widescreen tv you can still have your black bars on the top and bottom, with 2.x:1 movies.

I refuse to buy a Pan n Scan (Fullscreeen) DVD and I do not own a widescreen TV. Just a 32 inch 4:3. I am correcting this situation as my 53" widescreen is being delivered next Monday.

Point is...I have 250 + DVDs in my home without owning a widesreen TV and none of them are "fullscreen" versions unless the original film was made that way or the DVD has both on a single disc. I always watch the widescreen version on all of my 4:3 TVs. Why?

A picture is worth a 1000 words and as far as I'm concerned the following pictures say it all!

Is there ever a case where fullscreen will show some aspect of the picture that widescreen does not?

I heard someone saying there was, but I never saw any proof.

There are a couple. Most recently Terminator 3, you could see a lot more of the terminatrix when she arrives in the fullscreen. There are a few others.

Parts that her hair must cover to keep the ratings down.
