Vintage Polk Audio Cable

I bought two fifteen foot Polk Audio (speaker) cables off my friend some twenty years ago, and have used them ever since. Well, today my stereo (a 24yr old Yamaha CR-2020) made an awful noise and clicked off. I replaced the cables with 16g "speaker wire". Now my receiver seems to be working fine.
Question is, is there anything in this cable that would go bad after twenty odd years? Any way to check them? They all need new ends, now, is it worth while keeping them or are they likely to case trouble?
Thanks.

coppre oxidiseing and the older the wire is the more restance you get in the wire or you got a short from the insolation being worn away and the + and - came togher and cauesed a shut down new cabble that clames to be oxygen free is a good thing it stops the cabble from oxidieing and the curent travles on the outside of the cabble newer cabbles have more finer strands than older cabble too
