Some retailers, like Best Buy, are even using this type of information to sort the good customers from the bad ones.

By knowing which customers actually cost stores money by frequently returning items or only buying products that are on sale, retailers can exclude them from targeted promotions. Retailers can also use the information to offer more discounts and promotions to customers who spend the most.

I fall into the only buy items on sale category. This is from an article in our local paper taling about the plastic cards that you have to use at most grocery stores to buy the "sales" items (which is just about everything). I refuse to use them because they are a pain in the **** and I will go elsewhere just so I won't have to find that stupid card. This is my feeble attempt to support and reward the stores that don't use them. And when I am asked for my telephone # or zip code when purchsing something I refuse. I pay cash...and they want my info. I know that it is marketing...but I'm paying enough for the product....just take my money and leave me alone. Make the highly paid marketing guys actually do some work besides just gathering data.

OK....end of rant.
