Question about xovers

I am looking for some information on speaker xovers. Does the xover have an effect on the sound of a driver in relationship to the enclosure or port tuning or is the speakers sound determined soley by the cabinet size, port tuning and driver specs. I see diy speaker projects and they seem to focuse on the size of the cabinet ,port tuning, and driver and then apply a xover.
