I don't think this was goin' to get looked at in the thread I put it in (MemphisCar Audio), so I'm makin' a new thread for it. Here's my post in reference to Memhpis amps:

Their amps....
....are they any good? I would eventually get an amp to power my components so I could really hear all the details in my music. Does anybody know if they're amps are any good? How do they compare to JL Audio? Or some other reasonably priced (in other words not Polk!) amps that would do about 75 watts by four? The guy at the audio store said that I'd only need 55 clean watts for any components (well, that I was lookin' at) if I didn't have a sub. Does this sound right? I would probably end up getting some kind of sub in the future. (Probably after my second car; so, a while.) I think it would likely be an 8" in a sealed box; maybe somethin' like 300 watts.

I remember Hifonics, Orion, MTX Thunder and several others being mentioned before. I don't think I like the Orion amps 'cause their site is no good and I can't find any real specs on them!

Thanks!!!

    1) How come they're hardly talked about? That doesn't make much sense...

2)I don't know!! lol I haven't bought (err, got; Christmas gift) them yet.

I think these are the components I'm going to get. I'd like the step up, but I can get these for $180 and I like the way they sound.

    Thanks.

Ouch; I was wanting something better than Kicker...How does it compare to Alpine speakers?

The Q-forms from Crutchfield are the only kick-panels I've seen, and they will only accomodate 5.25" woofers, too.

    It's a '95 Jeep 2-door Cherokee; XJ (right??).

you have them in the bottom of your doors correct?
ive seen an install done where they got a piece of MDF and cut it to the shape that the door is(where the speakers are there is some kind of indention right?
he cut the wood to fit that indention and cut a hole where your door speaker is to a 6.5" hole, then carpeted it
then JB welded the wood to the door

I haven't heard any recommendations on amps.

And, how does Memphis compare to Alpine (speaker-wise)?

That sounds like a nice install; but probably cost some money, I'm pushin' it as it is.

Hate to hear that Memphis=Alpine; I guess I'll hafta start lookin' at speakers again. Really wanted somethin' nicer than Alpine speakers. However, I'll listen to the Memphis stuff again and see (err, hear) what I think.

HiFonics? Who else could I consider?

    Thanks!

it wouldnt cost hardly anything, you could do it with the spare wood around the house and carpet...
the reason why im pushing this is because 6.5s will sound better than 5.25s
what kind of price range are we talking here for amps?
    whats wrong with HiFonics?

Nothing's wrong with HiFonics; I just don't know of a store that sells 'em and I'd like to research something comparable. I'm not sure what my budget will be for an amp as it could be a year 'til I get one. Probably around $300, though.

    Thanks!

Man; I guess I'm gonna hafta lower my sights a bit. I was planning on gettin' a nice system: Polk speakers, Polk/JL Audio amps, Alpine HU; somehow that ain't happening. All well; it'll still be nicer than the stock system. I'm just gonna spend a lot of time at a few stores and really listen to some stuff and stop making decisions based on specs and reputations.

Hopefully I can get to a store this weekend.

I'll be in touch for more info; trust me!! lol

ive heard nothing but good things about them--i think if Polk wouldve marketed better theyd be used by more people
my only complaint is that their line is so small
but its to be expected since this is their first go around at amps...and im not sure well see them expanding their line anytime soon...

Right now I have yet again decided that I want an all Polk/MOMO system, lol. You mentioned that you saw a mod with some wood mounts so one could mount larger mids in a Jeep? Could you expound upon that? Only, I created a thread for it in Custom Fabrication. :D

For the money youre talking about, Id suggest JL Audio Slash series, Xtant's Xtant series, or Alpine's V12 series. I think all of those are better than the Polk amps. Not that the Polk amps arent any good, I just think that for the money, those mentioned above are better.

The 300.2 I have is extremely clean and all that. I have only two complaints: 1) paying for the momo label and 2) the pre-eq button adds a very audible amount of noise. Other than that, i like em.

on the 300.2 it adds a bass boost and a shelf boost at like 12kHz... and quite a bit of noise (i'd have used it, cause i liked the boost above 12kHz, but i couldn't take the small hiss... then again, i'm really sensitive to that kind of thing, only one of the installers at my shop could even hear the hiss, much less care). on the 400.4, it essentially replicates the mm6 crossover for biamping. i'm not sure if the 500.1 has one or not. if it does, it's probably a bass boost.

    Don't forget the new MMC5250 5- 1/4" components:

    http://www.polkaudio.com/car/product.php?name=mmc5250

They retail for $349.95, but Crutchfield has them for $299.99. That's more than you wanted to spend, so another option is the dB 5250:

    http://www.polkaudio.com/car/product.php?name=db5250

which retail for $209.95, and Crutchfield sells for $179.99.

Even with a 5- 1/4", you might not have an easy drop- in in your Jeep (it may require a spacer or some cutting). Depending on how much work your friend is capable of or willing to do, you should check Crutchfield's fit guide and see what fits. They're a bit conservative, sometimes you can fit something they don't list, but if they say it fits you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Thanks a lot for the links, Thom. For some reason I'm drawn to the MM6 and the whole idea of cutting up my Jeep and trying to get them to work. It sounds to me like a very exciting oppurtunity to learn; I might even really enjoy it. If it's possible, I'm gonna try to talk my way into these MM6 speakers; if not, I guess I'll hafta get some MMC5250s, which still won't be a bad option.

    Thanks!

I forgot all about the MMC5250's. That could be an alternative.

The thing with the Momo speakers is their depth, especially the Carbon series. Their basket is huge! But I still think you could make it work. Everybody and their brother told me I could make the MMC690's fit in my Ram doors but after listening to them at Circuit City I knew I wanted them so I was determined to make em fit and they did. I had to cut out around the hole to make room for the football sized basket and I used a spacer and although it barely fit, it did fit and works fine so Im sure you could make the MM6 fit and I think it would be worth the effort, the MM6 rules!
