I have a pair of CORAL BX-1500 Speakers: 150 Watt, 6-way, 7-speaker, 25-25KHZ. Old (1970) but BEAUTIFUL SOUND. beautiful until ex-son-in-law vandalized one of the speaker cones. I'm hoping someone can offer some leads on how I can replace or repair the 6-1/2," "Low Middler" 800-5KHZ.

Is it possible to make a replacement that would match impedance, size, freq Resp, etc well enough to pass muster??

A 6-way, 7 speaker system. These may well be the King of Kabuki speakers.

Kabuki speakers are a class all their own sir. They are optimized for VISUAL impression, not sonic impression. Japanese speakers circa 1970, with 15" woofers, MIGHT have a 25 cycle reach that is -25db.

With all due respect, you need to get out and hear what a real pair of speakers sound like.

A pair of vintage 2-way AR's, KLH's, Advent's, or Allison's with a 10" woofer, will allow you to do just that, AND give you real low end performance.

It's basically a loose speaker design as mentioned so clearly by Mr. Grand.

www.partsexpress.com will have a driver for replacement purposes. Just match up the spec's with what fits your wallet and I don't think you'll ever know the difference.

You could email them the spec's, and they will recommend a replacement as well.

    Good luck.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I had to respond after reading Mr. Grand`s coment. I own a pair of Coral BX-1401`s. Yes this is a loose design, maybe original for looks back then, but have you heard a pair? I have owned many top brand/model speakers of today but nothing gives the type of sound as these old corals do. Other then maybe some older Sansui`s. I have a older marantz putting out a TRUE 175 watts per channel and when hooked to my 1401`s, wow, crisp high`s, bass you can feel in your chest. Most of the speakers today would melt at the volume levels I have had these. Yes, with todays technology you can produce as good a sound with less drivers but that doesnt change the fact these things sound good! Also in less you have a seperate, self powered sub, you are not going to reach the bass extension with a 10" woofer that compares to the 15" in the coral BX series speakers. So Mr. Rohlofk keep your good speakers and dont let anyone tell you different. Check e-bay for original coral replacement drivers!

Hmmmm...... Most of the old sansusi speakers are exactly that too, Kabuki speakers. And they sound like **** in my humble oppinion. It is very hard to get 5- 6-7 way speakers to sound good. And if you want muddy loose bass that doesnt come close to sounding natural you can purchase a crappy speaker with a 15'' driver or larger, most sansuis had odd sizes 17'' for example . or you can get an 10'' driver that has tight fast low bass and sounds great and will handle double the power of a cheap 15" or larger driver. But if he wants an exact replacement I would suggest Audio Karma as a good place to begin. All this is very subjective though and if you and Mr Rohlofk prefer the sound of these type of speakers rock on.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Corals are crap. Get out there and listen some more, especially if your basis for comparison is old Sansui. Next thing we know, you'll be telling us about the finer qualities of the Pioneer CS99 and what not.

If you want GOOD vintage, pick up some old Advents, AR's, KLH etc. Sell the kabuki to a sucker online, or let them be landfill fodder.

Snow, can you believe he joined JUST to enlighten us on a 3 year old thread?

Yes I can believe it. He must have been doing a search on Coral speakers and found this old thread, and of course no one likes to hear that the speakers they own sound like crap.

I have owned and currently own some vintage speakers and some sound pretty good others sound like crap. Jbl-L112s Jbl- L100 centurys AR-3s sound pretty good to me. Others like pioneer HPM-900s sansui SP- X9000s didndt sound to good to me though the hpm-900s were the best of those 2.
