Well...My old reliable Sony 32" Trinitron TV that I bought in 92' as a refurbished unit from a Sony Outlet Store is starting to show its age. Things like the tuner is not working on some channels since I don't use a cable box - just direct cable in - and in general the picture is degrading some. But other than that I have had 0 issues with this TV (a testament for buying refurbs). It's time to start looking for a new one. I'm not one to make impulse purchases but I did last night. We had looked at a Panasonic PT-53Wx54 53" widescreen RPT at Sam's Club priced at $1,388.
Seemed like a good price so I did some research and discovered this RPT has a W in the model # which means that it is sold at Sam's, Costco, etc (must mean wholesale or warehouse). Generally regarded as a very good buy at $1,350 ± with the non W version being electronically the same but with a slightly different base.
.
We are in no rush to buy so when we were in Sears last night looking for a new oven for our kitchen, my wife and I wandered over to the TVs just to see what they had. There was the non W version sitting there priced at $1,589 ON SALE. The sales guy walked up and I gave my usual "just looking" reply. He replied with his required "that's a really nice TV" followed by "it's on sale you know....even better than the price shown".
Long story short...the TV was priced at $1,299 for a one night only sale (open till 9:00 on Sun. night) plus an additional 10% off for a price of $1,169 plus $40 delivery and tax came to $1,300. SOLD! Had to be the easiest sale this guy had all day...less than 10 min. Plus I just put it on my Sears card and have no interest till 1-1-06 so I'll use their money for a year and pay it off. Scheduled to be delivered 11-22. I'm pumped.

My father in-law(f-i-l) just bought the 47" version of that same TV. It has a very good picture with the features I would look for in a new television.
That is a very good price on the 53" version. My f-i-l paid $1400 for his at Circuit City, so the $1300 was definetly a steal.
Are you planning on upgrading to HD through cable or satellite?

I'm not a big network TV watcher. I rarely watch any of the channels that are currently broadcasting in HDTV but I will see what is available in our area.
This will be good that I can now take advantage of my progressive-scan Panny DVD player. Finally, I can watch my DVDs on a big widescreen!
This also means I probably need to invest in some good component cables. Anyone have any advice as to what are some good cables to look at...Signal, Bluejean....?"Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais
