Memphis Car Audio

Well, I went to an audio store today that I haven't been to in quite a while and checked out what they have in the way of car audio. The first thing I noticed when I went into the 'speaker room' was that they don't have Polk speakers. Next, I noticed they DO have Boston, MTX, ehh, and my memory fails me on the others. However, they also have Memphis speakers. I thought, "Wait a minute; what are these?! I bet they're some cheap things like the MTX speakers, yada yada yada..." However, I listened to the two component sets they had by Memphis, and I like!! I think I'd hafta say they're a little brighter than most that I've heard, but that are not 'bright.' They have good, detailed highs and good bass, from what I heard. I pretty much loved them. Plus, the guy said they'd fit in my '95 Cherokee. So, I think I'm gonna hafta jump on this!!
Has anybody else run into Memphis Car Audio? What all have you heard about them? How do you think they compare?
Thanks!

Im not a big fan of Memphis. They do make good subs and decent amps but Im not that fond of their speakers. As you mentioned theyre a little on the bright side and while they may sound ok in a soundroom, once they get inside a car with glass everywhere and other harshly reflective surfaces they tend to get tedious to listen to.
But if you liked them then thats all that mattered. Buy them, install them and God speed.
Personally though, Id take the MM6 or MMC6500 over them any day.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Since you own Klipsch
and these are bright, I say get them- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Yeah, that's definitely what I'm thinking. Especially since this guy has a $270 set of demo speakers he's sellin' for $170....
Sounds nice to me. I'll just hafta check the funds & such.
How long has Memphis been around? Are there amps any good? Should I look at another brand for amps?
Thanks.George Grand wrote: »

Memphis Audio has been around for a few years(at least 5). The amps I've heard are pretty good.
I guess it depends on what you are comparing them to. At the time they were no match for the old Kicker ZR series amps, but they held thier own in many respects.
Haven't kept up with the car audio seen for a while, but I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction for amplification.
BTW, what is your budget for the amp?Tschüss

Eh, well, all of this is just a 'oooh, that's nice; wouldn't mind gettin' that for a Christmas gift', so I really haven't had much of a plan thus for. However, I think I'd rather go with speakers and a HU right now and get the amp later on. If I already had a CD player, I'd say speakers & amp now, but the radio in my car is just that: only a radio. So, I think if I get an Alpine CDA-9831, that would run the Memphis ~ok until I could get an amp.George Grand wrote: »

....are they any good? I would eventually get an amp to power my components so I could really hear all the details in my music. Does anybody know if they're amps are any good? How do they compare to JL Audio? Or some other reasonably priced (in other words not Polk!) amps that would do about 75 watts by four? The guy at the audio store said that I'd only need 55 clean watts for any components (well, that I was lookin' at) if I didn't have a sub. Does this sound right? I would probably end up getting some kind of sub in the future. (Probably after my second car; so, a while.) I think it would likely be an 8" in a sealed box; maybe somethin' like 300 watts.
I remember Hifonics, Orion, MTX Thunder and several others being mentioned before. I don't think I like the Orion amps 'cause their site is no good and I can't find any real specs on them!
Thanks!!!George Grand wrote: »

1. JL is definately not reasonably priced for what you get....
2. stick to wattages close to and above the RMS of the speakers, this way you'll have enough headroom to not have to push the amp harder than it needs to be pushed. It's always best to get a fairly close match to RMS values, you're less likely to wind up pushing the setup into clipping that way.MacLeod: I guess youre lucky Polk has such lax hiring standards.
Josh: Damn skippy! -
Alright, thanks. So if the components I'm gettin' are rated at 40rms/80peak, should the amp be for 55wpc or 75wpc or 100wpc?George Grand wrote: »

if theyre rated at 40 then i would say no more than 55 watts per channel...unless you think youre going to upgrade later

Well, I dunno when I'm gonna upgrade. Whenever I get another car, I guess. Who knows when that'll be??? Maybe I should get an amp y'all want so that when I upgrade and need a different one, y'all'll buy it! lol I'll look at some at around 55wpc, then.
