Onkyo Power for LSi9?

This is my first post on this forum and I hope it will make sense.
I will soon be selling my 1980s model Polk SDA Compact Reference System speakers as they will not fit where our new TV sits.
I have been looking for replacement speakers for several months and recently listened to the LSi9s at Tweeter. I really like these speakers but can not afford Rotel or other pricey power sources at this time. I have found an Onkyo 602 AV Receiver and an Onkyo m-282 Amp (100 watts per channel @ 8 ohms) for about $528 combined. I will be running only 2 front speakers at this time and adding a sub when $$ allow. Will this Onkyo combo be enough power to get good quality sound from the LSi9s? If not can anyone recommend an affordable power solution for these speakers. I will only need 2 channel amp.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

First thing you need to do is find out if the amp can handle a 4 ohm load, if so then it'll be ok to drive the LSi's.Political Correctness'.........defined

You mention selling your SDA's. Be sure to offer them to people on this forum before going to ebay. There are a lot of SDA lovers here and many would like to get their hands on some(more in some instances).
Have you thought about the LSi7's instead of the 9's so you can spend more money on amplification?Tschüss

That onkyo amp will NOT handle 4 ohm. I know first hand. We used that in our speaker comparison first but the amp would shut off at barely listening levels. We took it out and put in the H/K PA2000 and it worked great. I HIGHLY recommend switching to a different amp. Well, unless you listen to it at uberlow volumes at all times...Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.
Home Setup: Sony VPL-VW85 Projo, 92" Stewart Firehawk, Pioneer Elite SC-65, PS3, RTi12 fronts, CSi5, FXi6 rears, RTi6 surround backs, RTi4 height, MFW-15 Subwoofer.
Car Setup: OEM Radio, RF 360.2v2, Polk SR6500 quad amped off 4 Xtant 1.1 100w mono amps, Xtant 6.1 to run an eD 13av.2, all Stinger wiring and Raammat deadener. -
Toxis,
First, "uberlow"???
Second, the Onk test you ran, was the 282 flying solo, or was it in a bi-amp scheme? Hard time believing that it wouldn't be OK only handing half the 9's in parallel with the 602's front channels...
Welcome to the forum Dale...
What attracted you to the Onk combo? Was it just price?
Selling your CRS's should adequately fund additional options that might not even require a 2 ch amp to supplement LSi 9 mains... especially if you are open to used.
Hard time picturing a set up that could accomodate the 9's but not the CRS's. I know the 9's are smaller, but the CRS's aren't exactly big...
At any rate, your loss will be someone's gain, hopefully another Club member's. There are a number of them within a reasonable drive of you. Just figure out what you want for them and post them in the Flea Market with a couple pics, if you can.More later,

Thank you all for the quick replies.
F1nut: Looking at the Onkyo website it appears that the m-282 will not drive 4ohm speakers.
okiepolkie: I did listen to the LSi7s and they sounded good but i really liked the 9s much more. I will list my SDAs here before anywhere else.
Toxis: You confirmed my fears about the m-282. I will continue to search Audiogon for an affordable 2 channel amp to fill in. Do you know if the H/K PA2000 is available online and at about what price?
Tour2ma: Thanks for the welcome. Price is what originally attracted me to the Onkyo gear. I hope selling my CRS's will offfset the cost of new equipment. I have no idea what my CRS's are worth. Any suggestions, as to a fair asking price? I am not opposed to used LSi9s. How often do they show up here and in what price ranges? What options did you have in mind that might not require the 2 channel amp? I will post the CRS's here but I will have to learn to post photos.
Finally, isn't this fun. I went to Tweeter to look at a pair of $399 Sapphire speakers that I could easily push with the Onkyo 601 with no separate amp and buy stands and a sub for under $1500. I made the mistake of listening to the LSi9s and now the other setup just doesn't sound good enough. The good stuff always seems to cost more!
Thanks again for all the help. I'm off to search for affordable used amps.Dale -
Pardon me if I am wrong, but I am not sure that Onkyo combo will work as the 602 does not have preamp outs.

If it does, I've got a Yamaha M-50 power amp I could let loose. 120wpc @ 8.

Dale,
CRS's are worth $200 to $350 or so...
Depends on:
- condition
- what model CRS (there were three generations: Original w/ 2 tweeters per cabinet, CRS+ w/twin blade SDA interconnection and CRS+ w/ pin-blade SDA IC; both CRS+ models had only 1 tweeter per cabinet)
- completeness, i.e., do you have the SDA interrconnect, manual, original boxes???
- how well you want to be liked around here... at least by one person...
Should you have the original stands, that's an add on to the above range....
As for "no-added-amp" options...
There are a couple of Mfg's that make high current AVR's... Outlaw, Rotel, B&K and Sunfire spring to mind. New, only the Outlaw is "affordable". Used you have a shot at all on this short list, especially if you can be happy with 5.1 for now.More later,

Tour2ma: My CRSs have the twin blade interconnect and a single tweeter. I have the metal stands that came with them and the interconnect. I'm 90% sure the original boxes are in the attic. I'm not sure about the manual.
Thanks for the suggestions for no-added-amp options. I can be more than happy with 5 channels. I will only be using 2 front speakers and a sub (eventually). I am only looking at multichannel receivers because I was told it was needed for the bass management feature (which I do want).
Any suggestions for an affordable 2 channel set up that will allow for movies and music in 2 channel with a sub and allow bass management?
Thanks again. Sorry to be such a pain but I have lived forever with a stereo setup and two full range speakers. This multichannel world is very new to me.Dale -
No apologies necessary, Dale. A couple years ago I was just getting into HT and was a much bigger PITA than you... some will say I still am...
On the CRS's, decide what you want for them and post your listing with price and pictures in the Flea Market... If the cabinets are mint and you do have the boxes, IMO, $350 would be both a fair and yet somewhat generous "Club" price. TBH, you might do a little better on ebay, but after fees and hassels are taken into account, your net would not be more than $400. I know I'd go $350, if mint, had I not just bought a pair (and still might... PM sent).
I think there are a limited number of 2 ch's that include bass mgmt. Other paths...
- Buy a sub that can accept speaker level signals. You route your amp output through the sub and let it manage the bass distribution. The SVS PB-10 does not allow this, but many other models do, as do most Polk subs... a couple of which would do a pretty good job in your room.
- Be sure any AVR you buy has assignable power. Can get this through programming or in some case, via external jumpers. This capability would allow you to bi-amp your 9's until rears, etc. are added.
- Buy separates... something like B&K's old AVP2000 would give you all the bass mgmt and short-term processing. Still see them occassionally on ebey for $100 to $150... there are other "outdated" AVP's as well. To an AVP you add as many channels of power as you like as you need them. Used Carver 2 ch amps are plentiful with plenty of power. Look for the model 1.0's, 1.5's and 4.0's. All are in the $250 to $450 range on ebay... Again there are other choices... Adcom, Outlaw, B&K to name a couple...More later,

the 282 was flying solo. We weren't running the amp in the receiver at all. Nothing but amp to 9's setup. It did have trouble and I was in shock myself but that amp is pretty sad. It'd be good if you wanted to run outdoor speakers or a pair of small speakers in another room for background noise. That's it.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

I can't help but think that there is something wrong with that particular power amp. Onkyo power amps are robust enough to drive 4 ohm loads. Hell, most receivers from the 60's and 70's are stable into 4 ohms. I bought an older Onk power amp specifically to drive the 4 x 12" woofers in my AR-9's, which will present a 2.9 ohm load in some cases (frequencies). No problems whatsoever, and it doesn't even get warm.
Is the location of the amp a place where it gets proper ventilation?

If these are still available have you decided on a price? Where in NC are you located. Depending on price/condition I may be interested as I have been wanting to break into the SDA arena but have limited room available. I could possibly do a local pickup.

Simm,
Thank you for your interest in my CRS's. I am still deciding on what to replace them with. I may still get LSi9s if I can come up with an affordable power solution.
I will not be selling my speakers until I put together a package to replace them. They are currently my only music source. Sorry to put you off but I am weeks if not months from selling my current gear.Dale -
No problem. If you do decide to sell them let me know the details and maybe I can get them. I have never heard any of the SDA speakers so I'm not sure what they sound like but would love to find out.
