So where do you find good deals on good packaging materials?

Trying to find some nice, heavy wall boxes aropund 20 x 18 x 36" to ship reeltrouble his Monitor 10's. Found a number of sites that give great deals in quantity, but I only want two, not a pallet of 300...

FedEx and UPS web-sites lack detail... OfficeMax/ Depot don't show to have the right size. U-haul's not close size-wise either.

    Actually, ask at your local UPS Store. They carry quite a variety.

    I checked a PackMail store here last night.
    Nobody carried a box that actual size that I could find. It had to be built from two 20" x 20" x 25" boxes.

    The price was around $15($6 per box, plus building). I don't know how sturdy the box was, but I would think if the 20x20x25 was used for an inside box, then a couple of 25x25x25 could be used for double boxing.

    I'll scope out FedEx and UPS stores tomorrow...

    The D's are: 16 x 11 x 28"... figured I'd add at least four inches all the way around to get a 2" gap on all sides, and build corner supports out of styrofoam.
    FedEx is wired to haul 'em if I can pack 'em...

    U-Haul franchises usually stock double-walled dish boxes that would do the trick I believe. My SDA 2-B's were shipped in them and they had plenty of room for bubble wrap and styro corners.

    How are Polks prices on the boxes, I've seen in their web site they sell the boxes for their speakers and the packing materals to.

    I've always used the UPS store, but that site is ridiculously cheap on what the things go for at UPS Stores.

    Now if you can only plan out far enough to get them shipped to you.......

    OK this is an old thread,but with the popularity of Ebay,etc..I figure my 2 cents will actually be worth 2 cents in the archives.And this is a secret too cause you don't want competition for packing materials.Go find a furniture store and go around to the dumpster or shipping recieving door and dig or ask for packing material.They've got tons of the greatest stuff! and some of the toughest boxes around,but most likely you'll have to cut them down.Being an Ebay seller myself i've become proficient at turning larger boxes into smaller ones and smaller boxes into bigger ones.Best trick i've learned is using wire and glue to hold seperate pieces of cardboard together.This may sound a little labor intensive..until you run around trying to find the right size and thickness box (Walmart at 2am is a great place for smaller boxes),not to mention what they're charging for boxes these days.Forget Lowe's or Home Depot - they give *nothing* away.An appliance store would also be good.And of course your grocery stores for banana and apple boxes.

    You have some good ideas here. It is not that difficult to score the lines in corrugated to make your own containers. One of the problems you may have is to score the double and triple wall corrugated. You will have to use an awful lot of pressure to crush it to make the score line so you can fold it. Someone probably sell a hand held tool that does it.

    Scoring the boxes with a box cutter is the way to go.You can use a razor knife on thicker stuff but the thinner box cutter blade is easier to move thru the cardboard.If your cutting with the ribbing of the cardboard you only have to penetrate the outer skin.If your cutting across the ribbing you need to cut about halfway thru the rib to make an easy bend;on the thicker stuff of course you have to go deeper,and to bend the corners line up the cut on a table edge and bend at that point for a crisp bend.I have a metal yard stick,and a drywall square to draw the lines I want to cut,and this is actually easier (but may take practice) than trying to cut along the straightedge,plus when you use a straightedge you'll dull your blade quicker.You wanna have a tape gun!Run strips of tape along your cut,bent corners.For heavier applications I run 3 strips:one with equadistant overlap on each side and the other two with a 1/3 overlap on each side.Boxes are a beautifull thing!When you send things out in them you make money or make someone smile!When you get things in boxes thats always a good thing! If a woman gives you her box thats always excellent,but if you get trapped in it a box cutter and tape will only make things worse!The word for today is "Boxes"
