Tchaikovsky 1812, Telarc SACD, 2001

Pretty cool disc. This is a case where spending the extra dough on the Fxi5 rears pays off. When the cannon volley occurs, they come from the rear channels.

However, I noticed that in multichannel mode, there wasn't a lot of bass. In stereo mode, the bass was slamming in the 102+db range. I figured out why the SACD is like this, they used the .1 for a set of "height channel" speakers. You're supposed to setup an additional set of speakers, on the sides, between the front and the rears! I've never heard of this. The booklet says to reconfigure your system to pull the bass from the front L/R tracks. What a pain!?

So, I just kicked it into All Channel Stereo and blasted away. This is my first classical disk, so it was fun to listen to something different.

This is also a hybrid disc so I could play it in my car as well.

Watch your volume level when the cannons go off....they've caused a number of speakers to crumble.

Very cool. If you're just getting into classical, check out Baroque Favorites. You can order it from www.referencerecordings.com Double disc HDCD. No floor warping bass though but excellent selection of classical music.
