Mr. Polkie ???

Went to a local CC Sunday to give a listen to the new Monitor series (review upcoming in the "Speakers" area). I had my CD wallet in tow, loaded with demo stuff and happened to be wearing the PolkAudio polo shirt handed out at Polktoberfest. I was ready to have some fun.
Setting was the typical elongated, hexagonal, CC soundroom (hey, at least they still have one more than BB can say these days) with propped open, glass entry doors opposite a sizable HDTV flanked by a couple AVRs and DVDPs. Bookshelves were on the backside walls flanking the doors and floorstanders filling the limited wall space flanking the electronics in an awesome :rolleyes: 90 degree toe-in configuration. Some Alicia Keys DVD was playing through a Bose surround system as I entered with a twenty-something, CC staffer named Sean in pursuit.
As I turn to close the doors behind me I hear the classic Something I can help you with today? greeting. Im just here to check out the new Polk monitors and how you have them set up (badly as it turned out). And with that, Sean helped me unload the Sony DVDP (sorry, Alicia) and I started loading in the demo material while Sean punched buttons lined up the new Mon 70s through an HK 630
Wed chatted about PolkAudio sporadically through Flim and the BBs Tricycle. I may have mentioned meeting Matt, and Paul, and Al, and Stu. Then halfway through Dean Peers Lords Tundra, I get the question, Do you work for Polk? I turned smiling and said, Not officially.
(It helps the story, if youve seen Wendys Hamburgers new ad campaign featuring Mr. Wendy.)
Near the end of Dean Peer the left 70 starts rattling so Sean pulls the grill to reveal the bottom MW flopping around loose outside the cabinet. One of the guys dropped this one as we were unpacking it, Sean explained. I frowned (a really good one). We managed to halfway wedge it back into place, but the four allen screws had all stripped out the MDF on impact, so it was not fixed. I asked about replacing it, and Sean went to get Jack, a more senior staffer Jack was at least 24, but turned out he was an RTi owner.
To make an already long story shorter
- pretty much repeated the whole build up to the do you work for question with Jack;
- casually mentioned I checked out a local Tweeter and their set up of the LSi and RTi lines the prior week;
- on the damaged 70, Jack explained they only had two pair to sell, and were reluctant to break up a pair to replace the damaged one;
- I ask well, how do you expect to sell them when they sound like this?;
- I show him how to effect a temporary repair by taping over the MDF holes with a few layers of electricians tape so the threads would bite (worked pretty well, too, for making it up on the fly);
- I ended up adjusting (Russ, doro and Troy had to see this coming) all the left hand speakers to at least approach a symmetrical set-up; and
- I even trimmed speaker leads to remove oxidized and broken bare wire on the 70s and 50s The positive lead on the Right 70 fell away from the post when I touched it.
A couple hours later I left. On the way out I found and thanked Jack for his help and asked him to thank Sean for me as well
I wonder if today they were talking about a visit from the Polk Guy
Maybe this week Mr. Polkie will visit Frys, just to make sure they are up to snuff

Hello Tour,
Thanks, very much, for taking the time to try and get the speakers sounding half way decent. If you can let me know the store's location, I can have the regional representative stop by and get things corrected.
Again, thanks for your excellent efforts! We really appreciate it.
Take care, Ken -
Hello Tour,
I related your experience to Al Ballard and we would like to send you a "Polk Good Guy" reward for a good deed above and beyond the call of duty. Send me your clothing size via PM and I'll ask Ms. Edwards to send you something nice, I already have your address.
Take care, Ken -

Cool! -
Damn! So all I gotta do to get something cool from Polk Audio is go to CC and harass the sales staff? Hot damn! I do that already!Expert Moron Extraordinaire
You're just jealous 'cause the voices don't talk to you! -
Gosh, I outta get on my CCs, They opened a new one, maybe I can make sure they made nice in their showroom.
btw, Tour, you have guts, I wouldn't have the patience to put up with those who think a rattling (or w/e of the sort) speaker is normal. -
Mjr,
Wasn't that they thought it was normal... more like didn't care enough to do something about it.
Plus I think they are pushing Infinity over Polk right now. Infinity has some big promo sale involving a free pair of their "award winning" surrounds with the purchase of a pair of overblown mains..
I didn't mention that I also noted that the Infinity's were on some "decent" looking speaker wire with tinned ends, while the Polks were on rag-tag 16 ga zip cord.
Next time I'm taking a small tool kit with me...
Jstas,
Gotta have a shirt bud... and be as nice as I know you can be having seen that side of you... once or twice anyway...Originally posted by Kenneth Swauger

OK, I'll cough up the info, if you hook me up with your regional rep... Deal? (Oh, and throw in a job application, too.)
And while it's not necessary, I will accept your token of appreciation. I am a manly XL, thank you very much...

LOL:D That's awesome! We all should purchase Polk Audio shirts and hats, go to our nearest dealers, tell them we work for Polk and we're here to make sure they're set up right.
That was very cool. Keep us posted on the adventures of Mr. Polkie.

I put on some slacks, my Polk shirt, and took my Polk pen and notepad with me today to Circuit City.
I 'requisitioned' a pair of Monitor 70's, for further evaluation. Told them something just didn't sound right with the display pair - and I would take them back to the 'shop' and see what was wrong.
Cheers,

I put on my Polk shirt and strolled downtown with no pants on.
Luckily I can run pretty fast.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

What did you think about the new Monitors? I'm building a dedicated HT on a tight budget and was wondering if shelling out for the RTis for home theater is worth it? If it was for a 2-channel system there would be no question.
-
doro,
Dogs chasing your weiner again? Next time at least wear your Polk underwear...
Maz,
Definitely worth a listen... Give the 50's a shot vs. the 70's. With about 2 dB more AVR they were keeping up surprisingly well. With a decent sub in the mix, the 50's would definitely be competitive and at half the price of the 70's...
On some older recorded material both tended to get a little harsh on the top end, even to the point of getting sibilent, but in HT not as big an issue.
Can't comment on the bookselves as I did not get that far.
Ken,
The shirt did arrive today. Now have a gray to go with my blue(-ish) one from the SC meet. Thank you...
Also spoke with Steve for about an hour last night.Going to try to meet him for lunch his next trip into town...More later,
