Your ultimate "budget" Polk 5.1 - 7.1 setup?
I'm a huge fan of 2-channel music and used to have LSi15s for that duty but got rid of them recently (don't ask). I'm in the process of building some line arrays for my 2-channel rig but would like to get a very good Polk 5.1 - 7.1 setup for the least amount of money possible. What I'm looking for is great performance right where the cost of going up to the next speaker wouldn't justify the price increase. Here's my scenario:
I do not need a subwoofer (I'm building four sonosubs, no joke) so we don't have to take that into consideration. The room is roughly 14x20x8 and I'm using an X1 projector on an 80 inch 16:9 screen. I might watch a movie every week or two, but my fiancee does like to watch movies. I do like playing XBox games in 5.1. I would like to keep the budget to $1500 for 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. As before, if you feel an $800 5 speaker system will sound 90% as good for movies as a $1500 5 speaker system, that's what I'd like to know. I am very critical when it comes to 2-channel, but with movies I'm not. I'd like floorstanders for the fronts and will be wall mounting the rears. I'm not sure if spending 50+% more on the RTis over the Monitors is worth it just for watching movies. Power is not a problem, I have plenty of it. I kind of like the way the FX wall speakers work with sound dispersion.
Ok, I think I nailed every idea! Sorry if that dragged on!
Let me hear what you guys would do!

Oh, this has to be purchased new. Don't ask, again! $1500 is the most I'd spend, using retail pricing.
Thanks! -
Vintage all the way. A pair of Monitor 7s and use Monitor 5s for the surround and center. You'll need to apply a bucking magnet to the center channel but Ken would know exactly how to hook you up with one.Make it Funky!

Where does it have to purchased new FROM? If it doesn't have to be a local retail store, look at the following site to get a set of RT38i's for a good price. (two sets if you are willing to sacrifice for direct radiating speakers as surrounds).

That would be a start.Tschüss

Gah, I might as well just say it. I get Accomodation pricing from Polk for working at Circuit City (part-time). 65% off everything except LSis are 60% off. There, you got me

If you can get 60% off the LSi line, *why* are you asking?
Just get the best LSi setup u can afford man...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

I stand by my suggestion even though I missed this tidbit.Make it Funky! -
Three pairs of Rti4 or Rti6's would be perfect. Either use 6.1 or sell the lone speaker you don't need. Why pay for a center channel that cost nearly as much as a pair of speakers.Sony KDL-40V2500 HDTV, Rotel RSX-1067 Receiver, Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray, Slim Devices Squeezebox, Polk RTi6, CSi3 & R15, DIY sub with Atlas 15

The Lsi's have not been on accomodations for about a year, unless you know something I don't. (please tell if you do) -
Due to the temptation of the great CC sell-off of the RTi line, I put together a second HT set up consisting of:
RTi6 - mains
CSi5 - front center
RTi4 - surrounds
CSi3 - rear center
I have to say that for spending less than $600 on these speakers, this little set-up rocks for HT! For 7.1 I would swap in a set of FXi3's for the surrounds. Add a decent sub and I don't think you would be disappointed! I'm planning on using my spare PSW505 and PSW303 stacked in a corner with an external crossover sending the mid-bass to the PSW303. As soon as my new SVS subs arrive I'll start playing with that.DKG999
HT System: LSi9, LSiCx2, LSiFX, LSi7, SVS 20-39 PC+, B&K 507.s2 AVR, B&K Ref 125.2, Tripplite LCR-2400, Cambridge 650BD, Signal Cable PC/SC, BJC IC, Samsung 55" LED
Music System: Magnepan 1.6QR, SVS SB12+, ARC pre, Parasound HCA1500 vertically bi-amped, Jolida CDP, Pro-Ject RM5.1SE TT, Pro-Ject TubeBox SE phono pre, SBT, PS Audio DLIII DAC -

Knowing this, I'd go get 3-pair LSi-7's and an SVS and be done with it...
Perfectly matching soundstage, Vifa ring tweeter, 7's dig deep enough to hand off to the SVS, big bass...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
3 pair of LSi7s retail for over $2400, so that's a tad over budget. I'm really only looking to spend no more than $500 with the discount. I'm a true 2-channel kind of guy and surround sound is nice, but not my top priority.

Or about $900 on CP...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction.
