I know this has been discussed before.. but just this weekend I moved into SACD. I've had DVD-Audio for a few years now... and i really enjoy it.

I bought a cheapo Samsung HD841 DVD player (with DVI video output) which plays SACD and DVD-a. WHen I play a SACD there is no bass to the subwoofer. BUT, on DVD-A there is? Kinda strange don't you think?

WHy would one multi channel format offer bass output and the other not?

Something is not right. One if the 6 analog outputs IS to the subwoofer. It must be something in your receiver that is not set up properly. The only issues I have heard with some SACD players is lack of bass management but not lack of bass altogether.

How many SACDs have you checked?

I don't think a sub channel is actually a requirement for SACD. I've seen SACDs marked as multi-channel with from 3 to 6 channels. I've also heard that the 6th channel can be used for full range to an overhead speaker.

    DB,

Do you have some kind of selector on your pre/pro you have to manually move or set to multi-channel to get the analog outs to work?

Not familiar with the Samsung but maybe some type of menu setup problem where the DVD-A is actually using the digital feed for 5.1 but the SACD is set to use analog?

Dont really know for sure but I had to get my Onk set right when I first went to the Hi Res discs.

I have the same DVD player (bought a cheap one while waiting on High Def players to come out).

-- Check the Samsung setup. All speakers to small and sub set to ON.

-- make sure you have your receiver set for the six channel analog IN.

As an aside. If you are accidently sending DVD audio via your optical connection...you are only getting Dolby Digital 5.1 and NOT DVD audio. So my suspicion is that either the sub is turned off on the Samsung OR you are not getting the 6 channel audio analog signal in to your receiver.

on my receiver.. i do have to select analog 6 ch input.. and it works great like i said for DVD-a. just that for some odd reason SACD doens't send any LFE info to the sub.

I checked and rechecked the menu settings in the Samsung DVD player.. and they are all correctly set up. (The Samsung has very few settings anyways).

I have checked a few (3) different SACD's.. same thing on all . no LFE.

So far i'm not impressed with the Samsung.. i got it mostly for the DVI output for my HDTV. While the upconversion looks better than component video... every time you upconvert the video signal.. the picture becomes smaller and smaller. Higher the resoultion.. the smaller the picture becomes. so it's not really worth it i don't think. I think instead.. i'll return it and get an Panasonic with SACD and DVD-a.. that should satisfy it for me.

    Good call there Marcus.

Right now.. i do have both a coax digital cable and 6 analog cables coming out of the Samsung.. and in the menu i DID in fact have the speakers set to large.. my bad! still strange how for DVD-A there was LEF, but not for SACD.

Oh well, all is well again in my little world.

thanks guys.. i should know better by now.. major brain fartage there. :)

I ended up returning the Samsung HD841 to BB

just didn't like the cheapness of the whole thing. the DVI video only look slightly better than component video. I bet with better component cables... i can get the same quality as DVI

I'm using Monster video 3 component cables right now.. need something with better everything.. ;)
