i have recently purchased 2 gnx124 subs. they are 400 peak and 175 rms each and 4' ohm. What are the specifications for the best amp i can get without blowing out a fuse. Is the amp supposed to be more powerful than the subs or are they sopposed to be less.

Is this specification on an amp campatible:
400 watt rms x 2 @ 4 ohm

Since the rms on the subs are only 175 rms, am i supposed to get a sub that is more like?

150 watt rms X 2 @ 4 ohm

well i just need specifications on the perfect amp that will provide enough power but not damage the subs or the amp. Thank you.

The peak rating is worthless. The one you need to pay attention to is the RMS which in this case is 175. The 400 watt amp will work if youre easy on the gains. Its 400 at 2 ohms which means you hook up 2 4 ohm subs to it and itll put out 200 to each. Thats only 25 more than rated so as long as you dont go crazy with bass boost and gain settings it should work.

Ideally youll want an amp that puts out 350x1 RMS at 2 ohms to mathc perfectly but this would be ok.

actually, the amp says 400 watts by 2 channels at four ohms... this is a significant amount of overpowering, but this provides optimum sound quality (crazy headroom and not running near the limit). so, if you go here and follow those directions, you will be just fine. this is after hooking up each sub to one channel on the amp.

if you don't have the amp you listed the specs for, get one that does 175 x 2 @ 4 ohms, or a mono amp that does 350 x 1 @ 2 ohms. if you'd like reccommendations give us a price and we'll give you an amp (or four, more likely).

Oops, I thought that said 2 ohms.

Anyways, Neo is right that a bigger amp will allow more headroom, however I still like to match amps with speakers power handling. A lot less chance of things going wrong. Plus its cheaper! LOL

yeah, that's true, it is a lot cheaper, but hey, if you've got the amp...
