MM2104 in a .5 box?

Sounddomain has these at a good price ($100) and I was thinking if I could make one work cause Id really like to go all Polk for speakers.
Here's my thinking---->
The MM handles 300 watts and Ill be giving it a little over 350 and we all know how well MM subs like overpowering. But rather than going with the recommended .66 box if I were to go with a .5 wouldnt that let it handle those extra 50 watts?
The reason I would be going with a .5 is thats all the room Ive got and Ill be lucky if I can come up with that much!
So we've got a MM2104 in a sealed .5 ft3 box getting 350+ watts. Whatcha guys think? Think it would sound like **** with too much power in too small a box or would they offest each other enough to sound pretty good.
Ive heard the MM2104 at Tweeter and it sounds great! I dont wanna spoil it.

I really dont know what I'm talking about but I think that you'd be exceeding the max thermal power handling regardless. The box volume would make it so it moved too much but it still might fry something? I'm not really sure. I'm just taking a guess cause I thought I read something on that a while ago.2005 Subaru Impreza WRX

Could that possibly be the reason we hear about so many blown momo subs? That their 500 watt rating. or 400 for the MM2's...is their thermal rating? That maybe in their recomended .66ft^3 box, they need less then the 500 or whatever watts to reach xmax? That could be why Polk never had any problems with the surround hitting the grills...1993 Ford Ranger super cab:

I was going off my MTX 8" I have now. Ive got it in a .29 box and its recommended for a .37. Ive also got 350 watts going to it when its rated at 150! And to date, its not so much as whimpered!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Macleod, like spwuinmk67 (what is your name anyway?) said, putting the sub in a smaller box wouldn't let it handle more power since it's a thermal rating. There's two main ways to blow a sub: exceeding its thermal rating(overpowering no matter the box size), and overexcursion - too much power for the box size, even if you're giving it less than its thermal rating. Your idea would fall under the first category.http://www.silverdragon.com/punkie/cybertusk/net.idiot.html - Read it, know it

Well even if you get them without Polk's box, that could be why Cody blew so many...My name is Bill btw.1993 Ford Ranger super cab:

{sigh} Oh well. I discovered that the IDQ 12" would work in a .55 box and handle 350 watts and I was jumping up and down! Then I went outside and measured and there is really no way I can fit a 12.
I guess Im stuck with the Kicker L7. Its the only sub that will fit with little problem.
The good thing is I like to be different and there aint a whole lot of people out there competing in SQ comps with 8's much less a single 8!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

you could always call polk up and ask what the thermal power rating is. cause as we all know, cody quotes the 1600 watts rms of his brahmas, but if he put them in the reccommened box and fed them 1600 watts all the time they would tear themselves apart - 1600 watts is when stuff starts to melt. this can happen at no excursion, btw - if you feed 800 watts into each VC but with the signals inverted, you get no cone movement but 1600 watts of power in the sub... you could probably sit there and watch the VC burn... so, i'd say call polk and ask what the thermal rating is, then make sure you don't go over that OR over excursion, whatever's less. It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

i doubt its thermal, but i dont know
if at all possible, id get an IDQ---they are one of the best SQ subs on the market
or how about a koda 10?
if polk rates their subs thermally, thats not very smart on their part
they dont market their subs to the people that would know what thermal rating is...

The IDQ 12 wont fit, at least with my meager talents. And the IDQ 10 only handles 250 watts!
I really want a 10 so I still may go for the MM2104 cause I really like the way they sound and stick it in the .5 box with 350 watts and see how long it lasts. Who knows, it may just suprise us.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Plus I dont want to wait 3 months to get it!
I think the Momo will fit the bill. Its not that big and even tho Ill be overpowering it by 50 watts, I dont listen to any bass heavy music so I shouldnt have a problem. Im gonna keep my eyes open whilst I save some scratch but I would like to show up at MECA represent'n (a little hip hop lingo there) Polk. The show I just went to NOBODY had Polk anything. Memphis, Audiobahn, JL, RF were the main gear. I did see a Planet Audio and I think even an **** sub in the mix.
Any advice from the Polk installers would be appreciated!!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Thanks Kim, that answers a lot. I wasnt sure how the SQ would be affected and as this is for competition purposes, thats my primary concern.
Well, I guess its back to the drawing board.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I'll just put my DB12's back into that dual 1.2 box... I'll never have to worry about them cooking... just throwing themselves off the basket with my new 1k amp.
(but.. then again I need car parts waaay before MDF... can't stop the car with subs... well, at least I wouldn't want to see em go that way...)___________________________
