in-ceiling speaker recommendations
Anyone have any suggestions for in-ceiling speakers?
I am looking at installing 12 rooms of speakers in my new home, and was considering the RC80i model. I also am thinking of trying a pair or two of the better models in the more-used rooms, but was curious as to others' findings.

Bump...
kk2ed,
There are some in-wall owners around. Must be temporarily shy...
I'm not an owner, but have read here that ceiling installs do need an enclosure behind the speaker(s). While they benefit from some "enclosure" volume, a whole attic can be too much of a good thing...

I enjoy the Polk in wall/ceiling speakers, but then again, those are the only speakers I've had extensive time to listen to.Brian Knauss

I've got a pair of ab755's in the media room serving up duty as rear surrounds. No enclosure besides some foam insulation. I've also got 4 Paradigm reference in walls in the bedroom HT. I ended up going with Polk for the ab755's purely for timbre matching with the rest of my speakers. For inwalls in their price range, their good. The Paradigms are better, but they cost more and would be more comparable to the new Polk LSi inwalls (which I have yet to hear). I've listened to Klipsch inwalls, which sounded poor to me. One of my listening tests for inwalls is how quickly the highs drop out once your out of the sweet spot. Polks dispersion is pretty good. The Klipsch's were poor.

Thanks walter, I was thinking that the volume in the wall section defined by the studs to either side (standard 4' centers) defined the volume needed for wall installs...More later,

Not exactly, but they certainly need some attention given to the space that they are mounted on and in.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Does Polk make enclosures for the RC-80i, or can I just stuff some material around them, like the insulation I used to see in the older floor-standing speaker cabinets of the 70s?
In some rooms, I have the whole ceiling span distance (approx. 13-15ft) between the TJI beams where the speaker construction template brackets are mounted. I am guessin this would be too long of a "simulated cabinet". -
