My neighbors hate me. I have done everything I can do to sound proof my theater room, and still they say I am rattling their walls. If I don't have my system turned way down by 10:00pm, they call the cops.
I don't play it that loud either, most of my movie watching is ~100db. I can get it loud enough to peg the db meter (4 subs)but that's RARE.
Today I was home sick, and just like any of the rest of us would, I was watching some flicks. Nothing too loud, 95-100db. I hit the pause button for a sec. and went to the kitchen for a drink. I hear this mower running, not mowing, just running. That &%$#er tied the kill bar on his mower and left it running outside my window. He left it there running till it ran out of gas! LMAO So I did what any of us would in a similar situation. I cranked the volume up, waaaaaay up.
I doubt he could even hear the mower running over all that. lol
Our house's are kinda close, 20' or so. And I have been over the city's noise ordinance with him too. Basically, I can do whatever I want between 8:00am, and 10:00pm.
The feud is on! I shall show no mercy! Anybody up for some 5am test tones? Hmmm, maybe not, but they neighbors will be, well, they will be after the test tones!

Just my .02.......happy neighbors will make your life much happier. 4 subs? Why does anybody need 4 subs...geez! Anyway, have you considered putting your set up in the basement or having the room professionally sound proofed? Regardless of the noise law, it's your responsiblility not to piss off those around you. Oh and btw, 100dB is loud.Political Correctness'.........defined

well. you gotta take into account.. not every neighbor may share your love of movies/music and bass. Talk to him... and get on his good side.. maybe a bottle of his fave alcohol.. then when he passes out.. crank that mother up!PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I just had THE neighbors that did nothin but **** about my music move out. The funny thing is I dind't even realize until the manager of our complex told me.
What's best about it is they realized that as much as they hated me and my music, they got it louder, and more often, from the neighbors than they did me......
Good Riddance.......comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
some by-laws may change ours did, we don't have a by-law anymore now peeps can call the cops anytime of the day if they find it to noisy, the last thing you want is war with your neighbors

I guess I'm lucky. My neighbors are REALLY good sports (as some of you can attest).
I agree with Jesse, killing the volume a bit ( if you think that ~100db isn't really loud, we have different standards ) is a small sacrifice compared to having a permanently pissed off neighbor.

God, I hope that is peaks, if not, well, are you deaf yet? The fact that you couldn't hear a lawnmower tied up next to your window shows me that you are running the whole system very hot.
My advice, turn it down and apologize. Even if you feel that you have done nothing wrong. Neighbors hating you is not a good way to go.There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. The theater room has brick walls, no windows, and no outside doors. The walls are doubled and sound-proofed (summer project), the ceiling is the only thing I haven't changed. That's where I think the bass "leakage" is coming from. Even at full tilt, if I stand outside, the sound doesn't register on a meter at all. It sounds like distant (very distant) thunder.
I couldn't hear the mower running in the theater room at all. I heard it when I went into the kitchen. If a bomb went off outside, you'd never know it in there.
The 4 subs (2 12's, 2 15's) where my attempt to achieve a flatter in-room response. I used multiple subs to fight room modes. It works really well. <2db variance on a 20-80hz sweep. I think there might be one magic frequency that resonates in their house. And talk about tactile, good grief, lots of impact there!
It hasn't always been like this with them. They are/were great neighbors. Old folks, their son and his kids moved in when he lost his job. It all started when I had their grand kids arrested for breaking in to my shop. I heard all this noise coming from out back, yelling, baning, etc. They busted down the door so they could smoke (underage) in there. I called the cops and had them arrested for B&E. I dropped the charges but they're still mad about it. He still has no job, so he's home all the time. Nothing better to do than fight with me I guess.Go BIG or go home! -

Actually..... My store's new neighbor is a hearing aid company. They needed some comptuer work done. I told them no charge if their audiologist tested my hearing. It actually tested far better than what is considered "normal". That would explain why I can hear the squeal from a tube TV that's on in the other room even if the volume is muted. That sound makes me nuts.Go BIG or go home!

You are listening loud. Don't get me wrong, I like it loud. But maybe it's time to finish the project and sound proof the ceiling. Your neighbors shouldn't have to hear your rig. I'm lucky, my neighbors aren't that close. ****, I'd have to encase myself in 6 feet of concrete.

theres a 14 yr old next door to me and our houses are also about 20 ft apart. she likes to blast rap from her shelf system all day long, and i do mean all day. so one day i had decided it was time to show her how a real system sounded. i threw im some drowning pool (chemical opposite to rap) and cranked it. i know she could hear it over her music because when the song ended her music was louder (she had turned it up). i won the battle and the war.
personally, i like stereo wars but i've never let it get out of hand. maybe you should try to be understandable at first. offer to find out how loud you can have it without giving him problems. bring your spl meter and record the readings in his house. that way, when he calls the cops on you, you can prove that it wasnt very loud and hes just being a dick....if thats the case. if it really is loud in his house, then be a good neighbor and turn it down, or sound proof the ceiling lol.
good luck -
That stuff just cracks me up. People fighting over noise. Please.
I know stuff can get out of hands. But it sounds like sowen has done all the right things. And if the guy is still complaining when he runs it full tilt and all you hear is "muffling" outside. Well the guy has some serious problems.
My neighbors on the west side of my house party every weekend. They have a large extended family, and they all come over every Friday and Saturday night. Play cards outside until 12:00-1:00 a.m. I work every Friday night so that is no big deal, but I have every Saturday off. I have yet to have any compaints about them. My feeling...it's your house, your party, your family....live it up. Just invite me for a beer every now and then!:D
Seriously whats the big whoop? Maybe I am more lax than most people. But what does it gain you to complain to the police? You piss off a neighbor that you basically have to share air space with until you or he moves. He would have been better off speaking to you like a man instead of calling the cops.
Your neighbor has "p**sy" written all over his name. I say crank it and eff him. -

Crank it and eff 'em! lol
I've been over it, and over it. After the sound proofing, I ran Revolutions with the volume turned up to "stupid". "I" couldn't hear it in their house. Who knows.
One night, 'bout a month ago, some kid drove down the street thumping around 2am. He rattled my windows. About 45 minutes later, the doorbell rang. It was the cops. The neighbors thought it was me! The cops said they couldn't hear anything when they pulled up. I told them the story. He said "Ohhhhhhh, they're own of THOSE...........sorry man". And that was that.
My disk disease makes doing the ceiling myself pretty much impossible (the working over the head thing). It'll cost some good coin to have it done, but I'd rather spend it on equipment. A couple friends and I planned out a bandpass box with dual 15's ported through the outside wall for emergencies. So when they park the mower, I can hit the big red button. lolGo BIG or go home! -
Arresting neighbor's kids a great way to make a point, but it evidently doesn't make you a good neighbor.
Sounds as if you threw down the level of law enforcement first and you will have to be the one that loosens it up.
I invite my 72 year old neighbors that live less than 10 feet away from my house to watch movies on occasion and he loves it as long as I've got a fresh bottle of JD to tap.

It didn't happen like that. I didn't know when I called the cops that it was the neighbor's kids that were in it. I just heard a lot of noise out my computer room's window coming from the shop. The alarm, which wasn't armed at the time (middle of a Sat. afternoon) showed motion INSIDE the shop. So, I called the cops. They were arrested, but like I said, I dropped the charges on the condition they buy a new door.
I know, I have my CCL.Go BIG or go home!
