My step father wants an old receiver the kind with a dial for fm tuning he hates presets, he needs a phono and AUX input, what should I look for in old gear and what brands...My mom doesn't want to spend a fortune but a decent one.

thanks

Look for some of the Silver Pioneer receivers from the 70's. They are somwhat easy to find at reasonable prices. If in good working order they are very good receivers and their tuners are excellent! Here is a good site to see what was made and give you an idea what to look for SILVER PIONEER AUDIO GEAR. I have a SX-3700 that only has 45 wpc which is sort of lower/middle of the pack as far as power but it is a nice receiver and powered my Large Advents with ease. They were built like tanks when compared to todays gear. Mine still works flawlessly today...25 years after it was purchased (only one small bulb is burnt out).

Check Classic Audio for some vintage receivers. I still have my Marantz 2226, love that blue lit tuner and the gyroscopic tuner knob.

Major cool factor in the thumb-wheel tuning knob...

But if Dad's into black gear, look at McIntosh, once THE name in audio electronics...

Several receivers from which to choose, but their Model 1900 is an unappreciated (meaning you can get one at a good price) little gem...

Older Nikko and Onkyo receivers are underrated, while all the rest seem to be overrated. I've seen people pay $4-500 for a damn Pioneer SX-750 or 780. Also seen really good Nikko and Onk go for peanuts.

I have a few older receivers with analog tuning. I'll part with any of them, so if you've got the hots, drop me a line.

    Willow,

Ditto what Tour said about George. You'll not find a better deal on vintage gear than from the man, the myth, the legend.
