theres some gunk on my comp screen so i go to scratch it off with my finger nail and somehow my finger nail scratches my comp screen. now i have a bunch of scratches right in the middle of my screen and its driving me crazzzzzy. is this possible? did my finger nail really scratch my comp screen? i tried to do it again just to see if this was really possible and i can't scratch it again. what the hell happened? i tried windex just incase the scratches were smudges but that didnt work either.

is there some coating on the screen that i scratched off? can i put the coating back on? I have a sony vaio and a trinitron monitor just in case that helps.

edit ~ actually i just tried again and i was able to scratch it again

Because most monitors have anti-reflective coating and that's probably what he scratched off.

Well we can rule out that it was a fluke......that's a good thing...lol

How long have you had the monitor? Glass or does Sony do flat panels?

glass, its one of those big 17" trinitron monitors....it might still be under warranty through best buy and the extended warranty that we bought, would this be something thats covered by the warranty?

It may be, but don't tell them you were using abrasive cleaners on it or it will be nullified.

It's most likely the coating I mentioned. I've heard of quite a few people having this problem.

id rather get it replaced with a flat screen sony for $70 more. i guess this is one of those times the extended warranty came in handy :)
