Christmas: DVD/CD player

Now that Christmas is coming up again, it's time to start lookin' at toys. I would prefer a Yamaha unit (just brand loyalty, I guess), but you might could persuade me otherwise. I want something that will play SACD and DVD-Audio, as well as DVD, CD-RWs, MP3s, and VCDs. I found the Yamah DVD-S1500, and it sells for about $450. That's pretty much my price range. I'm sure anything'll be better than my current source (computer).
I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

I guess the lack of responses means that Yamaha's no good. Or, maybe I'm just being too impatient.
Anyhoo, I'd really appreciate any comments.George Grand wrote: »

I have a marantz 6400 and I like it a lot except it is not a changer. I think the 6500 is now the current model. I paid $500 for it
-
One way I look at it is a person gets what they pay for. I have been checking into the Denons just so it looks the same (flat black) like my other stuff. Today I checked into a Pioneer Elite.....really good looking unit but it has a high gloss finish.
..........to each his own I suppose....:DDenon #2900, Denon stereo receiver, Conrad Johnson Sonographe 120 amp, Blue Jeans cables, and Klipsch RF-7's -
I have been looking hard at the DVD-S1500 too. I have no Yammy dealer locally so it makes for a hard sale to myself. I really like the feature set, and the price is right. Yomammaha makes a great product too. Maybe I'll just get one and let you know.Go BIG or go home!

At one point a while back the Denon 2900 was top dog in the economy class of do-it-all players.
Good timing on this thread, it will be interesting to see what shakes out.More later,

If you do get one, lemme know what you think. I'll do the same; though, even if I get one, I won't get it until Christmas.

I'll definitely look into the Denon 2900
I'm actually kinda lookin' for a single player (versus a changer). Are there any real advantages over changers? The reason I want one is I imagine the trays for 5-disc changers can be pretty flimsy, and I never have enough time to listen to more than one CD.

I was just checking out the Denon 2900 on Denon's website. Besides being a little too expensive, here's what I found:
Sony CXD-2753 Second Generation DSD Decoder
What's Sony stuff doing in Denon equipment!!
From their description, I can't determine if it plays VCDs and SVCDs or not; it lists audio/video CDs. Is that what it means?

I am looking for one right now. I can't find anybody worth a crap to buy from. Everybody that says they carry it has terrible ratings. Without a dealer, it's tough. I'm gonna keep looking but who knows.
Oh yeah, Sony and Phillips originated SACD and license out the tech. As I understand it, players with separate SACD decoding systems use a Sony chip to decode SACD rather than the "one chip does it all" cheap players like the <$200.00 units you find at Best Buy.Go BIG or go home! -
The Denon 2900 can be had, refurb, for less than 600. Supposedly a great machine.

Oh, I see. That makes sense.

I'm not sure I'd want to buy anything refurbished, and, 600 is still a bit too steep. I want something more than JUST a DVD player for Christmas!!

What's wrong with refurb?
They come with the same warranty and are usually substantially cheaper.

Well, do you have any links to refurbed stuff? If so, I'll check 'em out. However, even if I were convinced, the parents would never let me spend any sizable amount of money (at 16, anything over $80 is sizable) on a refurbished anything.
I'm sure there are a lot of great deals on some really nice refurbed equipment, but I think I'm pretty much stuck with the new stuff.

Refurbished Denon units carry 90 days warranty as opposed to Brand New units which carry up to 2 years warranty depending on the type of equipment. Just thought you guys might wanna know.

Here's a link to a review some guy did on the Yamaha DVD-S1500. I would mostly use it for music and I've only read the music portion of his review, but it sounds pretty good.

Anybody found any other reviews?
