Got a new disease.....

I noticed that I've been avoiding (subconsciously) of listening to redbook (cd's) that my brain deemed of lower recording quality, and it annoys me, since it is progressingly get worse. From just listening to the contents, I am very painfully has been focusing (again, subconsciously) on the first track of any new CD of its recording quality, timber, punch, realism of piano's keys. Well, the end product is, I stacked up all of the great cds on one side and the rest on the other side, and anytime I am about to pull one from the rack, the brain usually has made its mind, to audition one from the good side. I supposed part of the problem is, with the modded Philips player, almost no defect or imperfection on the cd's quality managed to escape my scrutiny and its resulting judgement.

I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I have made a consious effort to not let the "sound" overshadow the "music". I have some CDs that are less than stellar in the quality of the recording but they still get a lot of play because I like the music so much. I've still got some recorded cassettes that I listen to from time to time. That doesn't mean that I don't look for the best quality of a particular album...like stepping up to a SACD when available, but I don't dwell on the sound alone. In lots of cases I may have a redbook CD that is available as a SACD but I am content with the redbook. I enjoy lots of different sources as well. I can still enjoy the music when I stick a CD into a $50 Panasonic Personal CDP played through a decent set of cans. Some of my favorite old time blues artists like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson are horrible recordings, but they are wonderful albums because the music is so good.
FOR ME...and I am not passing judgement on anyone else here...only for me...the day I stop enjoying the "music" because I am so wrapped up in the "sound"...then it is time for me to start spending the time working on my golf game more and spending the gear money on restoring the Mach 1 in the basement. Just a couple of little notes. Although I don't really have this "disease," I do listen to high rez recordings most of the time. I own about 2,000 CDs and only about 250 SACDs, but yet I find myself listening to SACDs about 90% of the time. One more thing, Robert Johnson has been recently re-mastered from some original acetates. Sony was able to aquire some un-played original acetates from a seller on ebay and has recently re-mastered the boxset. If the only copy of Robert Johnson that you own is THE COMPLETE ROBERT JOHNSON in the tall box, then you really need to upgrade to the newer version in the short box. Not only are the source materials of a much higher quality, but the studio equipment that they used to transfer the material is of a MUCH HIGHER quality, resulting in a nice smooth transfer.

I used to be like that but now it's all about the music. I've also noticed that sometimes, the recording, good or bad adds to the 'feeling' and atmosphere. I don't really mind bad recordings.
