Basically, you have to find a balance to all of these things to design a good sub.

    Good advice from try,
Some of the things to consider are Vas, Qts, Sd, Vd, Xmax, Qtc, Fb, F3, Lv etc when designing a ported enclosure.

Ok - I have been playing with various plans found on the internet (mostly from Adire) and decided on the EBS alignment for a shiva ported sub. (142.5 liters) This is about the largest box that I wanted to have with my current system. (not to mention with LSi7's as mains - max volume is not a big deal to me - I just want to hit as low as possible at near reference levels. (ideal would be near flat to under 20hz. @ 105db))

Anyway - if you look at the in-room response of the EBS enclosure (Shiva, ported, 142.5 l)

    http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/VentedShivaApplications.PDF

It looks really flat, but if you put those same specifications into WinISD it doesn't look nearly as good. -3 db at 23hz, -5.3db at tuning frequency of 18.1db. (111db +-2db from 27hz to over 200hz)

Using the same enclosure and plans but with an Adire dpl 12 and a tuning frequency of 16.7 db you end up with -.5db at 20hz, and -3db at 16.2 hz. (108db +-1db from 18.8hz to over 200hz)

My question is based on my initial requirements, does the Shiva or DPL 12 look better? How much should I factor in room response into my equations or should I just try and design as flat as possible and hope to compensate for the room with placement and perhaps eq?
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

IMO, dont worry about the in room response of Winisd or LSPcad. Also the EBS Shiva wont peak at the tuning frequency, the EBS design is for the most efficiency down low, not the most output.

The DPL12 looks like the better driver, but I dont know how well it will work in the Shiva box, Adire can answer that one.

Dont worry too much about the response, if you want a little more output down low, you can get an eq (like the BFD) since you have plenty of power available.

    Hope this helps.
