I just came across some info. that the new pb2-ultra in black has a diff. and cheaper cabinet build than the wooded cabinets with custom stain. For a price of 1999 vs. 2499, what is the major diff. It can't be 500 worth for just stain. Which is why I am wondering if the new black version is cheaper because of build quality. This is a quote from one of the guys at svs, off of home theatre spot. I don't want to spend 1000 dollars for a modified pb2+ w/ diff. woofers. This quote makes it sound as if the wood pb2ultra is diff. than the black pb2ultra.

    Ettepet,

Not the same PB2-Ultra enclosure. It's really a mix of PB2-Plus and PB2-Ultra design features. You will never know by looking at it. There will be some very very minor changes to size, but mostly invisible, and just so things all fit.

Side by side, or in performance or listening tests you won't know a black from a wood PB2-Plus.

Did not know this, but disturbs me not in the least...

Tom's last line you quote, "Side by side, or in performance or listening tests you won't know a black from a wood PB2-Plus," says it all.

Even without his reply, I cannot imagine SVS jeopardizing their carefully cultivated reputation by putting an inferior model on the market, especially a version of their TOTL model. They know that, if they did, word would spread like wildfire through the same forums that built their business to what it is today.

Yes, preparations continue at a steady pace. October 15 is the archery opener. We'll be ready......

The PB2-Ultra Black and Wood cabinets are simply made by different vendors. There is really no audible difference between the two. They are both rigid and resonance free and the same internal volume.

The PB2-Ultra wood cabinet is extremely complex and expensive to build, with all the corner work. SVS is looking to streamline and simplify the cabinet design anyway, so this Black version is probably a good intermediate step toward that goal.

Thanks for the reply Doc. One more ques. though, are the black version and wood version going to have the same dimensions and weight? This ques. directed toward the new PB2 Ultra.

There might be small differences in external dims because of the veneer on the PB2-Ultra wood version. Other than that, general size and weight should be very close.

An inferior product from SVS in any shape or form..... I hardly think so. The PB2+, ultra black or ultra stained will all be built to mount a full size car on without crushing the cabnet :D . It is adviseable to have an extra set of hands to even move either of the subs. You have nothing to worry about trust us. When you recieve it you will simply floored by first the shear size (for alittle while anyway) and then floored again every time you watch a movie with some LFE action.
