HDTV Vs. SDTV: The difference?

I live in Oz where they are starting digital TV broadcasts, which will mainly be in SDTV, however some will also be in HD.
My TV setup will only support SD. For those of you in the U.S. who have HD TV, how much better is the picture. Is it worth the considerable expense to upgrade?
I have a very good Grundig Xantia SDTV here which is currently receiving analogue signals. To upgrade to digital will require a set top box. Current signal is comparable to DVD quality.
So what is the difference?
