I listen to music 99% of the time so I use a 2ch amp. When it comes to HT, the rest of the speakers are powered by the H/K receiver.

7 Channel Outlaw for the HT/Multichannel Music.

Antique Sound Labs Tube Amp for SDA/LSi 2-channel rig.

Seperate amps are generaly of a higher quality than the amps in a receiver, they don't have to share a power supply with the processing section, and they don't need to be upgraded when a new format becomes available.

Four 2-channel amps power my HT. Three power the mains and center (bi-amp config.) and the 4th powers the surrounds.

I find that a good stereo amp is needed for smooth 2 channel listening. I think that quality is not as important to acheive good HT sound. Most receivers will do for HT only. That is why I put most of my equipment budget into the main 2 channels. Lesser so for the other 3.

I'd have to disagree. Since all amps sound the same anyway why not use the same quality equipment every where?

    I have both Stereo and Multi-channel amp. NAD C272 150w x 2 powers my Polk RT800i towers and the Adcom GFA-7605 125 x 5 powers the CS400i, FX1000 and RTi6 speakersl

    Why?

If I just want to listen music or watch movies with 1 or 2 ch soundtrack I use only my NAD C272 and the Adcom GFA-7605 stays off. But anything more then 2-ch I use both amps. This way I'm more flexible. One of the main reasons I bought Stereo amp because I'm a 2-ch music listener and very serious about it plus NAD C272 is one of the sweetest soundingl amps available in the market. IMHO I believe that Stereo amps mainly designed for 2-ch music and performs very well because of there internal design and engineering compare to multi-channel amps whereas Multi-channels are primarily for HT but still work excellent for music as well. The best thing about separates beside better sound is that you have more flexibility, room for upgradebility than a receiver.

I use 4 of the 5 ch's in Sunfire #1 to bi-amp my HT mains. No complaints here when I dial back to only 2 ch's. A quality HT amp can swing both ways.

That said, I also have asorted 2 ch's for 2 ch...

I use a outlaw 5 channel for both 2 channel and HT,

Will have to agree with tour here.....a good ht amp should be able to swing both ways...

that being said, I have never messed with a dedicated 2 channel system.....or tubes for that fact.

I currently have a 6 channel amp. (only 4 channels are currently working)

I wanted something that could drive any speaker I choose to try and run as my HT expands. At the time I had LSi15s running and due to space and location contraints found the 7's with a sub run and look better than the 15's for HT. (When I get a larger room, will run SDA 1c's in the front (already own) and 7's in the rear.)

I also am married with children and wanted something easy to run. (imagine the phone call - no sound from the center channel, look for lights from the 3rd amp up from the bottom on the second shelf.......)

For my needs, this is a great setup so far. (but really need a better sub - hey, I already have the amp for it..... :)

    Hi Willow,

I'm using a two channel Carver TFM-35x 250X2 for my main speakers in a HT set-up, with my receiver powering the center, and surround speakers. The carver is 2 1/2 times the power of my receiver. It's cleaner it opened up the front two speakers, and gives them much more detail than the receiver did. I listen to more music than movies, and really enjoy the sound from the power amp.

I use two channel amps for my two channel rig, and my home theater rig. Why? Cause that's what I want to do.
