...that was on tntaudio.com's website? The site is no longer registered and I get a search engine site every time I try to go to tntaudio.com.

I wanted to get plans for a flex rack so i could construct one of my own. I'm moving into an apartment next week and I'm finally going to have time to setup the SDA's properly. I need a rack and I want to see if I can do it for cheaper then the 80 bucks WAL*MART wants for thier cheapest rack. Doesn't need to be anything fancy at all.

The rack needs to hold a Adcom GFA-35MKII amp, Behringer Parametric EQ, Carver C-1 Preamp, dbx CD player and an Onkyo tuner.

I built one and it's awesome! Can't seem to find a pic of my rack though...

I think I paid between 60-70, but only because the cherry vinyl from Parts Express was about $10 a roll + shipping. I used 2 rolls... If you painted MDF it might be much cheaper...

I was thinking of using a half sheet of birch veneer plywood I have sitting around doing nothing. I think I can squeeze 5 shelves out of it. All I'd need to do is get the hardware.

If I can do that then, I'll just get a can of stain and go to town! I have polyurethane sitting around too so I'll use that.

Did you do the sound deadening thing? I don't see how much of a benefit that will have unless you have a turntable.

What would you do to the sides of the plywood? Wouldn't that show the plywood layers?

No Sound deadening for me. I just put cut up mouse pads under my gear... I didn't use the rubber washers either, seems that most people don't...

I didn't use rubber washers on my rack either. I don't really buy into all that isolation stuff, especially on something like the table to nut interface of a rack.

I painted my rack with black satin enamel. My total cost was about $60. I got my threaded rods, nuts & washers from an industrial supply wharehouse (called Apple Fasteners, not sure if they take orders from you without a business account; used an account from where I work) If you get the hardware from Home Depot or someplace like that, you'll pay about double for the hardware. But since you already have the wood & stain, all you really need is hardware. That might run you $30 or so at HD.

Greg, I used 1/2 inch all thread rod and they only cost about 3 or 4 bucks a piece and a couple bucks for washers and nuts. Maybe you're hardware was different than mine...

To cover the edges of the plywood, you can get edge veneer. You can either cut it from a sheet yourself or buy it in rolls of 1/2", 3/4", 1" and so on.

Threaded rod is cheap, so are the necessary nuts and washers. Hell, the wood is fairly cheap too. A half sheet of half inch birch veneer runs around 20-25 bucks. For the size of the shelves, half inch will work just fine. I can get 3 or 4 lengths of threaded rod for 10-15 bucks and open stock on the nuts and metal washers. Nuts and washers are about 5-15 cents a piece depending on style. I can get the rubber washers from the plumbing section. You can get a package of like 50 of the same size for like 5 bucks. That's better than the thick, vulcanized rubber isolation washers in the hardware section.

I'd go with 3/4" shelves just incase the upgrade bug bites and you buy a heavier amp. Or even better yet, double up on the 1/2 inch for a HE-MAN flexi! :D

I'm not going to be upgrading to anything huge any time soon. The bug may bite but the cash isn't there. Not for a while. Besides, I have HT stuff I want to get before I go upgrading a stereo component.
