My understanding of a layer change is that on some (not all DVD's) information can be imprinted on 2 seperate levels, when the movie runs over the first layer, the laser is redirected to the second layer. The time in which this happens is the layer change.

I think that for the most part, the layer change is mostly dependent on the DVD player, a player with buffering should show a faster layer change, maybe even to the point where it is not noticable.

Another trick on the layer change, lots of times the layer chagne will come at a dark part of the movie, or at a chapter change.... so where there is a break in the story line.

Somebody please jump in if I am wrong here...
