If she can tell it is on, I'd say you have some calibration issues...

It's a very boomy woofer. Probably a big spike at 50-60 Hz that's driving her batty.

Try a new sub, or a parametric EQ to tame that spike.

    Cheers,

Good call, Russ. May be an EQ issue as well as calibration.

Also occurs to me now that she could be in a reinforcing spot, while he's in a null.

    type-o,
Velo makes some exceptional sub's to be sure. Although I am planning a different purchase now, I lusted after a HGS for a long time.

My original point was that sub's should blend in. That your wife objects to yours in particular rather than a general "it's too loud" complaint, tells me it's standing apart from the rest of your HT rig. As I added above, it could be louder in her position than it is in yours.

Try calibrating it and running some frequency sweeps for where each of you sits, and you may find you can blend it to where she does not object, but you still get your jollies.

    typo,
First things first... grab a Radio Shack SPL meter and a calibration disk. About a $60 investment between the two.

EDIT: ... and before I forget to ask again.. whereabouts in O-Hi-O? Born and raised in the 'burbs of Cleveland here...

First, tryrrthg, just had a LOL experience owed to your new sig... very contemporary...

Sorry to read that article. Pains me to see my old home town hurting. The Indians fueled a downtown revival in the 90's that was spreading to the outlying areas of the city through Y2K. But among other corporate departures, BP's HQ exodus was just too much to overcome.

Hopefully they will turn it around...

It is hard to believe that Cleveland is in that bad of shape. I sure hope they can turn it around. It's a pretty cool city sitting there next to the lake.
