Found a pair in piano black at a pawn shop today, they have 800 on them but are taking offers. What are they worth? All drivers are in perfect working order and the finish is still very good, grill cloth will need replacment as a cat had its way with them. Let me know some info as I am going to have them hold them in layaway until I can get the rest of the funds together.

Cheers,
Mike

Jesse, you think they might take an offer of 600? Or is 800 a damn good deal even with the kittyclaw marks on the grill cloth?
    Btw, thanks for the info.

    Thanks,
    Mike

It never hurts to ask, eh? I haven't seen the Silver's getting a lot of money on ePay or Audiogon, so don't buy them to flip.

Obviously lowball them, $600 sounds like a start...counter any objections with parts availability and support if anything goes wrong. They have no warranties when they leave that pawn shop, so exploit the fact. Play the game.....get the speakers.

Grill cloth is a non-factor as it can be replaced. F that cat....he can't play CD's anyhow.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Do what you need to audition them first...

If the ribbons have delaminated (very hard to see just by looking), you can spend $400 each to have them repaired/ replaced.

Delamination is easy to hear. Will sound like bees are linving in the speaker...

So listen and frown and offer $400... :D

Edit: This is most recent ebay listing (# 5720010255 ). Sold for $712. Out of ten or so listings this year, only one has gone for more, and most others have been in the mid-$600 range. The low was $500.

    Mike,

I'd offer 'em 5 bills, tops. Unless it's a high end pawn, those will sit there for a LONG time, I'm guessing. A few bills in hand is better than none at all.

800 seems average to me, not a steal by any means.

Thanks troy, I was kinda thinking along the 5 bill line also, and I think I can get them for that so I am going to give it my best shot.

Tour, got to hear them in the pawn shop with about 85 per channel to them on a h/k receiver, did not hear any bee buzzing sounds so they must still be in good shape. I'm gonna offer 5 bones today and see if they bite on it, if not I am willing to go the to the 6 mark on them but thats as far as I will go. I'll keep you all posted and let you know if I score these as I have always wanted a pair.

Well I tried to talk to the guy long distance today over the phone about price and all he wants to do is absorb the tax and still wants 800, but if I come down to k town where he is located we can discuss the price further but he would not do it over the phone. Man two hours is a long way to drive to discuss the price on them only to get there and get shot down and come away with nada, I think I am going to pass which sucks big kahunas as I was really hopin I could bag these......Oh well such is life.

As long as he didn't know that you had driven 2 hours, you could still have a chance. A pawn shop is going to look at the cash in your hand and want it, but if they have the upper hand and know that you've driven 2 hours and are looking at going away empty handed and being pissed about it, they've gotcha.
