Am I missing something here? This isn't the same IPOD that Apple has had out for a while, right?

I've been on HP's site and seen their Ipod, but it's laid out differently than the Apple version. Why the 2 different manufacturer/designs on the same product?

They are exactly the same, but the HP iPod comes with iTunes for Windows only.

And it's got an HP logo with the Apple logo on the back ;)

They're doing that because HP can produce them quicker and cheaper than Apple. Both are identical in operation and what-not, seeing it's still Apple making everything for it except the harddrive.

I wonder if there's gonna be some QC issues with HP at the helm.......

Not that HP doesn't make a good product......but Apple definitely rules in their build quality of their stuff from what I've noticed......

I've been wondering the same thing. Seeing it's only an HP HD, who knows how bad they can jack that up. haha Again, we shall see...

I checked one out at Fry's today and it seemed pretty cool.

I have a Creative Zen Xtra 40GB that I like, but it's a bit on the bulky side. The problem with the IPOD's is that you're supposed to send it in to have something as simple as the battery replaced on it. I guess that's a moot point past the warranty stages, but that's irritating.

The combination of the touchwheel and the soft touch buttons though is pretty nice. It has a good tactile feel.....though, i'd wonder what the longevity is of a touchwheel that has to be pliable enough to be depressed for the soft touch buttons beneath it.

EDIT: I thought that the latest version of the Ipod was the touch scroll wheel and then the 4 circular touch buttons above it......maybe that's the design prior to what's out now, but already one benefit of HP being involved is that the pricepoints all dropped $100 on all the models.

Actually guys- HP and Apple iPods are manufactured on the same line . The only difference is the logo. The build quality will remain the same. The prices are also the same. The $100 decrease is because Apple did not release a 60GB version like everyone expected. If it comes it will occupy the $499.00 price point. BTW I own the 3G iPod (smooth scroll wheel four buttons). It is IMHO the BEST sounding player out there (w/ lossless codec).
    2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.
