Positioning of rear speakers

I recently purchased a pair of RT55is and a CS245i. The manual has several diagrams as to speaker positioning for surround sound including ideal angles, etc.

For the rear speakers, the Polk manual recommends positioning the SR and SL with the grills facing each other and the grills at a 90 degree angle to the listener. This is in direct contrast to the front and center speakers which, of course are "front firing" toward the listener.

Why is the recommendation to position the rear speakers that way? Logic would dictate that all speakers are aimed toward the listener, rears included, which I would believe is FR facing SR and FL facing SL.

Welcome rlightfoot, a Bucky Badger eh?

To me, this means the speakers are to be positioned, one on either side of the listener facing each other.

in this configuration, the speakers will be aimed at the listener.

which I would believe is FR facing SR and FL facing SL.

I was following you right up 'til here,
where you mentioned France facing Srilanka and Florida facing Salt Lake.
I'd have to pretend to understand, so as to save face, but really I don't so...
    could you spell it out?

Sure Trub, and yea, Bucky and ****.

What I was tying to get across, is why not Front Right facing Satellite Right (AKA rear right or France facing Sri Lanka) and Front Left facing Satellite Left (AKA read left or Florida facing Salt Lake)?

One other assumption is that the room allows for rears to be placed 5-10 feet behind the best seat in the house, aka, MY SEAT!

yeah, spent some of my best years in ol' wisconsin.
Bart Starr Carol Dale and the rest of the pack.

The rt55's, being direct radiating, need room to open up their sound field.
And most people don't have 5-10 feet behind their sofa's.
So, in your situation, the arrangement you describe may work well.

Play around with 'em see what sounds best in the best seat in the house...
