Couldn't find a recent thread on inexpensive hi-res players, so wanted to see if there were any recommendations.

I saw the new Pioneer 578a, but I'm not liking that it seems to use really cheap parts for its audio DACs, and even converts SACD to PCM. Still, at this price, and having DVD-A too, I might go for it if it's the only choice.

So are there any other players out there sub $300 that will output both SACD and DVD-A, hopefully at their true specs?

Polk Audio LSi9, LSiC, LSi 7 // HSU STF-2 // Signal Cable Interconnects (SG BW/A2/MP)

the only other player I know of is the Samsung 841. it retails $200 or so. It's the one that also "claims to upconvert" the image if you're using DVI out. Picture looks WORSE if you do though... go figure.

    How about 2 players?

The $150.00 5 disc Sony SCD-CE595 SACD/CD changer is an amzing SACD player. And the CD playback is quite good as well. No DSD >> PCM conversion here. There's no DVD circuitry in this player, just Burr-Brown DAC's.

The $130.00 5-disc Panasonic F-87 DVD-Audio/Video player will allow not only DVD-A playback, but also HDCD decoding on regular CD. Have gotten good notices over at audioasylum.com

So, $280.00 for 2 players that will cover all your bases.

you can only hook up one hi rez player to your receiver at a time.. it would be no fun switching (6) RCA cables between the two players.

DB - Actually there is a "relatively" inexpensive way to do this TWO 5.1 Sources - ONE 5.1 input. A universal player is still probably the better option.

lomic - A few to check out and see if they meet your requirments:

    Toshiba SD-6915
    Toshiba SD-4960
    Samsung DVD-HD841
Yamaha S1500 (slightly above your price range)

You might want to consider spending a little more money by stepping up to the Yamaha DV-S2300, Marantz DV6400 or the Denon DVD2900.
