cable under carpet

Well due to the water damage we are are having our carpets replaced...This is a perfect time to run flat wire to the rears. Now my question is, can we walk all over the wires and it will not affect anything ?? do I need Rated flat wire to run ?? Maybe I will run 3 runs for a rear centre incase in the future. But will speaker cable under the carpet be noticable and will we be able to feel it ? and will it get affected that it will be placed in a high traffic area ??

Thanks !!

there will be nothing resting on the cable just peeps walking over it once in a while...we are only 2 in the house plus a 15lb dog, so it isn't in the main hallway where there is tons of walking I just want to be sure that the daily walking which isn't alot we are at work all day, will not harm the wire, sure running along the wal is an option but a costly one at that instead of 100ft (Total) going around the walls directly I would only need about 50ft.

I assume that there's no basement/ crawlspace available here... yes?

anonymouse is correct. Standard speaker wire will suffer under heavy foot traffic.

I can't recommend a good flatwire (others here likely can), but if you compare the cost of the extra footage to run the baseboards to the cost of a good flatwire, you may find them to be pretty damn close.

BTW, laying standard wire between two carpet tack strips at doorways will keep the load off of the wire.... just be sure to keep the wire off of the carpet strips.

we cannot run cables in the "basement" that is where our bedrooms are...it's a garden home so it's a finnished sub-semi-basement. hmm looks like I will have to look into other options

Saw this in another thread. I don't know how well it works sound wise but it looks like it would go under the carpet just fine.

I almost hate to bring it up, but I am using Monsters SuperFlat™ Navajo White Easy-to-Hide Speaker wire. It works well and you can run it around the base board if you need to....it works for the rears, but I would not use it for the mains.... but it is flat and can be run under the carpet. If you do run it under the carpet, make sure that you leave plenty of extra above the carpet so you have some flexability..

You can find the cable at CC on a spool

so what would happen if we get the carpets steamed ??and the cable is under the carpet ?? if I use the monster flat stuff or AR flat..can I run it right down the middle of the living room ?

You could run it down the middle of the room, but I still think that I would run it around the edges, between the tack strip and the wall. That way the cable will get a little protection from the wall and the tack stripp.

between the tack strip and wall isnt enough room for flat cable to wide so I could go that route but with reg cable...hmm have to see what would be cheaper....

    Willow,

either way you go, I would still look at running the the cable around the edge of the room and not down the center. just me though....
